Peter Schmalfuss, born on January 13, 1937 in Berlin, Germany, was a German pianist. He studied under Walter Gieseking and Wilhelm Kempff, among others, and began his touring career in Europe, North Africa, and Asia in 1960. His notable performances included a complete cycle of Beethoven sonatas and a performance at Chopin's birth house in Żelazowa Wola, Poland. Schmalfuss was also known for championing neglected chamber music by Carl Maria von Weber and for his recordings of contemporary composers such as Akin Euba and Salvatore Sciarrino. His discography includes albums like Friedrich Smetana: Klavierwerke (1987) and Franz Liszt: Klavierwerke (2002). Schmalfuss served as a faculty member at the Darmstadt Academy of Musical Arts for over two decades, contributing significantly to its cultural life before his death on October 23, 2008.
