The Junge Deutsche Philharmonie is a German student orchestra founded in 1974 by former members of the German National Youth Orchestra under the name German National Student Orchestra. Established as a self-governing ensemble, it was created to give young musicians greater artistic independence and the opportunity to shape their own musical direction. Membership is open to talented music students from German conservatories and universities who successfully pass competitive auditions. Over the years, the orchestra has collaborated with many distinguished conductors, composers, and soloists, including Pierre Boulez, George Benjamin, Péter Eötvös, Julia Fischer, Sol Gabetta, Christian Tetzlaff, and Jonathan Nott. Since 2014, Jonathan Nott has served as principal conductor and artistic advisor. The orchestra has earned numerous awards, including the German Record Critics’ Award, the German Critics’ Prize, and the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Advancement Award. It regularly performs in major concert halls across Germany and appears at prominent international music festivals. Since 2008, it has also organized its own biennial festival, FREISPIEL. Beyond its concert activities, the orchestra has contributed significantly to Germany’s musical landscape, with ensembles such as Ensemble Modern, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Ensemble Resonanz, and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra tracing their origins to its members.
