Philip Gordon Langridge, also known as Philip Langridge, born on December 16, 1939, in Hawkhurst, Kent, was an English tenor known for his contributions to opera and oratorio. He began his career as an orchestral violinist. Langridge's breakthrough came with his fine singing technique and dramatic instincts, leading him to perform a wide range of roles from Claudio Monteverdi and Mozart to modern works by Ravel, Stravinsky, Janáček, and Schoenberg. He was particularly noted for his performances in the works of Benjamin Britten. Notable roles included Peter Grimes and the Prologue/Quint in The Turn of the Screw. Langridge also collaborated extensively with Harrison Birtwistle, creating roles such as Orpheus in The Mask of Orpheus (1986). He was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1994 for his services to music. Langridge passed away on March 5, 2010, from bowel cancer.
