Cherubini Quartet was a leading German string quartet founded in Düsseldorf in 1978/79, named after the Italian composer Luigi Cherubini. The ensemble initially consisted of Christoph Poppen and Harald Schoneweg on violins, Hariolf Schlichtig on viola, and Klaus Kämper on cello. The quartet gained international recognition for its interpretations of 19th-century string quartet literature. In 1980/81 and 1981/82, they received the Märkisches Stipendium für Musik, and in 1981, they won the Grand Prix at the International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France. Their repertoire includes works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Robert Schumann. The quartet's lineup evolved over the years with members such as Ulf Gunnar Wallin on violin and Manuel Fischer-Dieskau on cello.
