French mezzo-soprano singer Jane Berbié was born on May 6, 1931, in Villefranche-de-Lauragais. She began her musical journey at a young age, starting piano studies and entered the Conservatoire de Toulouse at thirteen, earning medals in various disciplines. Berbié's breakthrough came when she was encouraged to focus on singing after performing Charles Gounod’s Ave Maria. She moved to Paris, joining the Opéra Garnier in 1958 and becoming a prominent figure in Mozartian roles under Georges Hirsch. Her career spanned major European stages including the Scala di Milano, Glyndebourne, Carnegie Hall, and Metropolitan Opera. Notable performances include Mignon and Lakmé. Berbié collaborated with renowned conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and Lorin Maazel. She received the Oscar for singing in 1960 and was decorated as Commandeur de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2024.
