Michael Moloney, born Michael Moloney on November 15, 1944 in Limerick, Ireland, was an Irish-born American musician and scholar. He began playing tenor banjo as a teenager and studied economics at University College Dublin. In the late 1960s, he joined the Johnstons folk band and immigrated to the United States in 1973. Three years later, Moloney co-founded Green Fields of America, an ensemble that toured extensively across the US. He produced and performed on over 70 albums, including Strings Attached (1980), Far from the Shamrock Shore (2002) and McNally's Row of Flats (2006). Moloney received a National Heritage Fellowship from the NEA in 1999. He taught ethnomusicology, folklore, and Irish studies at various universities until his death on July 27, 2022.
