Wolfgang Gönnenwein was a German conductor and music educator born on January 29, 1933, in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany. He studied music and German studies at the Universities of Heidelberg and Tübingen before becoming a music teacher. In 1959, he became the choir leader of the Süddeutscher Madrigalchor. Gönnenwein was appointed as a professor at the Stuttgarter Musikhochschule in 1968, and later served as its rector from 1973 until 1982. He also led the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele until 2004. In 1985, he was appointed Generalintendant of the Württembergische Staatstheater in Stuttgart. Gönnenwein's notable recordings include Bach's Matthäus-Passion and Haydn's Die Jahreszeiten. He conducted numerous tours across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. His career spanned over four decades, concluding his major roles when he stepped down from his final position as president of the Landesmusikrat Baden-Württemberg in 2010 due to health reasons. He passed away on July 26, 2015.
