Guiomar Novaes

Guiomar Novaes, a Brazilian pianist, was born on February 28, 1895, in São João da Boa Vista. She studied with Antonietta Rudge Miller and Luigi Chiafarelli before being accepted at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1909, where she won first place in a competitive jury that included Claude Debussy and Gabriel Fauré. Novaes made her U.S. debut in Aeolian Hall in New York City in 1915. She performed frequently in the United States, notably at Carnegie Hall during the 1960s. Her final concert appearance in New York was at Hunter College in 1972. Novaes passed away on March 7, 1979.
