Lars Anders Tomter, born November 30, 1959, in Furnes, is a Norwegian classical violist and professor, widely recognized as one of the world's leading performers on the instrument. He studied at the Oslo Conservatory of Music and the Norwegian Academy of Music before continuing his training in Bern with Max Rostal and Sándor Végh. An international soloist and chamber musician, Tomter has toured extensively with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and performed with conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Krzysztof Penderecki, Iona Brown, and Mariss Jansons. He has served as artistic director of the Risør Chamber Music Festival alongside Leif Ove Andsnes. His recordings include works by Mozart, Britten, Walton, and Vieuxtemps. In 2010, he was appointed a Knight First Class of the Order of St. Olav.
