Jennifer Vyvyan was a British classical soprano who was born in 1925 in Broadstairs and died in 1974. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music and gained international recognition after winning the Geneva International Music Competition in 1951. Vyvyan made her professional debut in 1948 as Jenny Diver in a production of The Beggar's Opera with the English Opera Group. She is famous for her long-term association with the composer Benjamin Britten, who wrote roles specifically for her in the world premieres of the operas Gloriana (1953), The Turn of the Screw (1954), and A Midsummer Night's Dream (1960). Her recordings include the operas Owen Wingrave (1971), The Little Sweep, and Spring Symphony. Vyvyan was also recognized as an expert in the music of Purcell and Handel, performing in the 1960 revival of the opera Radamisto.
