Philip Mark Jones was a preeminent British trumpeter and a pioneer of brass chamber music. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in 1944, where he served as principal trumpet for several major London orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic (1956–1960), the Philharmonia (1960–1964), and the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1967–1971). In 1951, he founded the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, a stable collective that revolutionized brass performance through over 50 recordings and international tours across more than 30 countries. The ensemble's extensive discography, which featured works like Voices of Trumpets (1975) and Pictures at an Exhibition (1978), spanned from early music transcriptions to contemporary commissions. He ended his performing career in 1986. Afterward, he became the principal of the Royal Northern College of Music and chairman of the Trinity College of Music.
