Joseph Keilberth was born on April 19, 1908, in Karlsruhe, Germany. He began his career as a répétiteur at the Baden State Theater in Karlsruhe in 1925 and later became Kapellmeister there. In 1935, he secured the position of General Music Director in his hometown. Keilberth directed the German Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague from 1940 until the end of World War II. Post-war, he served as conductor of the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden until 1949 and as principal conductor of the Berlin State Orchestra from 1948 to 1951. From 1950 to his death in 1968, Keilberth was chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony. He also held positions at the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra from 1951 to 1959 and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich until his passing on July 20, 1968. Notable recordings include Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen and Richard Strauss: Arabella.
