Rufus Perryman, known as Speckled Red, was born on October 23, 1892, in Hampton, Georgia. He was an American blues and boogie-woogie pianist and singer who began his musical journey with self-taught piano skills. His career took off when he was discovered by a talent scout from Brunswick Records while living in Detroit. His first recording session for Brunswick yielded the classic tracks "Wilkins Street Stomp" and "The Dirty Dozens". Speckled Red continued to record throughout the 1930s. In the 1950s, he was rediscovered by Charlie O’Brien, leading to a contract with Delmark Records and his 1961 album The Barrel-House Blues of Speckled Red. He passed away on January 2, 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri.
