Brian Asawa was an American countertenor born on October 1, 1966, in Fullerton. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by opera and for being the first countertenor to win both the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and an Adler Fellowship. Asawa achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he sang in a Methodist church choir and studied voice under the musician Harlan Hokin at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He achieved professional recognition for serving as a pupil of the musician James Tyler at the University of Southern California. His recording career began with his professional opera debut in Das verratene Meer (1991) at the San Francisco Opera. Asawa achieved professional recognition for his debut at the Santa Fe Opera as Arsamene in the opera Xerxes (1993). His discography included the studio recording The Dark Is My Delight and other 16th Century Lute Songs (1997) and the studio recording The Faces of Love - The Songs of Jake Heggie (1999). He achieved professional recognition for winning the Operalia International Opera Competition in 1994 and performing roles including Ottone in L'incoronazione di Poppea and Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus. He achieved professional recognition for collaborating with the musician Diana Tash on a studio recording (2014) and establishing the agency Asawa and Associates in 2014. Asawa died on April 18, 2016.
