Paul Schöffler, born September 15, 1897, in Dresden, Germany, was a German operatic bass-baritone. He studied voice, piano, violin, and music theory at the Dresden Conservatory, followed by further training in Berlin and Milan. In 1924, Fritz Busch engaged him at the Dresden State Opera, where he debuted as the Heerrufer in Lohengrin. During his tenure in Dresden, he performed in the world premieres of Kurt Weill's Der Protagonist on March 27, 1926, and Rudolf Wagner-Régeny's Der Günstling on February 20, 1935. In 1937, he joined the Vienna State Opera, where he remained as an active ensemble member until 1972, singing 42 major roles, including 103 performances as the Count in Figaros Hochzeit. He made international guest appearances at venues such as the Bayreuth Festival, where he sang Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. At the Salzburg Festival, he performed in the world premieres of the opera Dantons Tod on August 6, 1947, and Die Liebe der Danae, in which he sang Jupiter. He was named an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera in 1970 and received the Mozart Medal from the Mozartgemeinde Wien in 1964. Schöffler died on November 21, 1977, in Amersham, England, and was interred in an honorary grave at Vienna's Zentralfriedhof.
