Johann Sonnleitner, born in 1941 in Trofaiach, Austria, is an organist, harpsichordist and music historian specializing in early music and historical keyboard instruments. After studying organ with Alois Forer, harpsichord with Eta Harich‑Schneider, and music education at the Vienna Academy of Music, he completed master classes with Gustav Leonhardt, Anton Heiller and others, and began performing as a soloist and accompanist. In 1979, he joined the Zurich University of the Arts as a teacher for historical keyboard instruments, later teaching at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis from 1983 to 2003 and leading master classes at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. He published essays on performance practice, notably Bach: Wie schnell? with Clemens‑Christoph von Gleich.
