Johnny Corley, born April 28, 1943 in Greenwood, South Carolina, is an American soul singer. After leaving Brewer High School for military service, Corley returned to Norristown, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a heavy‑equipment operator and joined a gospel group at Macedonia Baptist Church; his vocal talent was noticed by producer Jesse James, who persuaded him to pursue secular music. Corley’s breakthrough came with the 1967 single "Boogaloo Down Broadway", released on Phil‑L.A. of Soul under the stage name the Fantastic Johnny C; the track peaked at number 5 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 7 on the Hot 100 on December 23, 1967. In 1968, he released three additional charting singles-"Got What You Need", which entered the R&B chart at number 32 and the pop chart at number 56), "Hitch It to the Horse" at number 25 and number 34, and "(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful" on the pop chart at number 87. He issued the album Boogaloo Down Broadway the same year. Corley remained with Phil‑L.A. of Soul until 1970 before signing with Kama Sutra Records, where he released two more singles under the name Johnny C that failed to chart. After departing the music industry he opened J.C. Records in Norristown and performed occasionally in later years.
