Cord Garben was a German pianist, conductor, and producer born on February 11, 1943, in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe. He studied piano and conducting at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Hanover before serving as a répétiteur at the Niedersächsisches Staatstheater. Garben joined the label Deutsche Grammophon as a classical producer in 1972 and received seven Grammy Awards for his work on opera productions. His recording career as a pianist included approximately 60 recordings of Lieder, notably the complete edition of songs and ballads by the composer Carl Loewe in 21 volumes. Garben served as the president of the Johannes-Brahms-Gesellschaft Hamburg and was an honorary member of the International Carl-Loewe-Gesellschaft. Their discography included the studio recording Alexander von Zemlinsky: Lieder and recordings of works by the composer Hector Berlioz. Garben authored the book Zur Interpretation der Liedzyklen von Franz Schubert (1999) and the book Gratwanderungen mit einem Genie. Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (2002).
