Jackie Brenston

Jackie Brenston, born on August 24, 1928/1930, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, was an American singer and saxophonist. He joined Ike Turner's band, the Kings of Rhythm, in 1950 and recorded "Rocket 88" in March 1951, which reached Number 1 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart. The song has often been cited as one of the first rock 'n' roll records. Brenston pursued a solo career and performed with Lowell Fulson’s band before rejoining Turner's group in 1955. He continued to play saxophone in various sessions, notably the Cobra session with Otis Rush in 1958. Despite his early success, Brenston struggled with alcoholism and did not achieve further hits. He died of a heart attack on December 15, 1979.
