Anneliese Rothenberger, married name Anneliese Dieberitz, born on June 19, 1919, in Mannheim, Germany, was a German operatic soprano. She began her vocal training at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Mannheim and made her first public appearances in 1934. Her stage career commenced in 1942 at the Theater Koblenz as Christel in Carl Zeller's Der Vogelhändler. After World War II, she debuted at the Hamburgische Staatsoper in 1947 as Oscar in Giuseppe Verdi's Ein Maskenball. Rothenberger undertook international tours to North and South America from 1952 to 1953. Her breakthrough came with her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1954 in Rolf Liebermann’s Penelope, followed by roles such as Papagena in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (1956) and Zdenka in Richard Strauss’s Arabella (1958). She joined the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in 1956 and was a member of the Wiener Staatsoper from 1957 to 1975. Rothenberger also performed at the Metropolitan Opera from 1960 to 1965, debuting as Zdenka. Her film appearances include the English adaptation of Johann Strauss’s operetta Die Fledermaus (1955). Her extensive discography includes a recording of Alban Berg's Lulu (1968). She retired from the opera stage in 1983 but continued giving Liederabende until 1989. Rothenberger died on May 24, 2010, in Münsterlingen, Switzerland.
