Đặng Thái Sơn, born July 2, 1958, in Hanoi, Vietnam, is a Vietnamese and Canadian classical pianist. He began studying piano with his mother, Thái Thị Liên, and was later discovered by Russian pianist Isaac Katz. In 1974, he moved to Moscow to study at the Moscow Conservatory under Vladimir Natanson and Dmitri Bashkirov. His breakthrough came in 1980 when he won the X International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, becoming the first Asian to achieve this feat. Despite initial political difficulties that restricted his international performances, Đặng Thái Sơn has since performed on major concert stages worldwide, including Lincoln Center in New York and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. He has collaborated with renowned orchestras such as the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic, and conductors like Sir Neville Marriner and Vladimir Ashkenazy. Notable albums include Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2 / Nocturne In D Flat Major / Scherzo In B Flat Minor and Dang Thai Son Plays Chopin.
