George Chakiris is an American singer and dancer born on September 16, 1932 in Norwood Ohio. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career that began after studying at the American School of Dance. Chakiris achieved professional recognition for the role of Bernardo in the film West Side Story (1961) for which he received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. His recording career included the studio recording George-Chakiris (1962) which reached number 28 in the United States and the studio recording Memories Are Made of This (1962) which reached number 45. Chakiris achieved professional recognition for the studio recording The Gershwin Songbook (1962) which featured the track "Stairway to Paradise" and the track "Someone to Watch Over Me". He performed a nightclub act in Las Vegas and achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967). His recording career included the track "Le Soleil italien" (1976) and the track "Mon pays c'est le soleil" (1979). He achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Rappelle-toi (1980) and performing in the theater production The King and I (1995). Chakiris became inactive in 1996.
