Franz Vitzthum, born in 1973 in Weiden in der Oberpfalz, Germany, is a German countertenor who grew up in a musical family and received early training in violin at the Regensburger Domspatzen. After studying Germanistik and Pädagogik, he pursued vocal studies with Kai Wessel at the Musikhochschule Köln, transitioning from boy soprano to tenor and ultimately to countertenor. His breakthrough came in 2001 as co‑founder of the ensemble Stimmwerck, which focused on Renaissance music. He has collaborated with contemporary composers like Max Bockschäfer, performed at the Baroque Festival in Finland, and contributed to the Stimmwercktage festival series from 2005 to 2018. His solo career includes Luthers Laute (2015) and Die Kunst des Sterbens (2022).
