Claire Waldoff, who was born as Clara Wortmann on October 21, 1884, in Gelsenkirchen, Westphalia, Prussia, German Empire, was a cabaret singer and actress. After training as an actress, she took her stage name and worked in Bad Pyrmont and Kattowitz before moving to Berlin in 1906. Her breakthrough came in 1907 when she began performing at the Roland von Berlin theatre. In 1915, she made her silent film debut. Her recordings from the 1910s, including the songs “Wer schmeißt denn da mit Lehm” (1913) and “Nach meene Beene is ja janz Berlin verrückt” (1911), showcased her talent for chansons in the Berlin dialect. Throughout the 1920s, she toured Germany, performed at the Scala and Wintergarten variety theatres, and collaborated with composers such as Walter Kollo and writers including Kurt Tucholsky. Her posthumous compilation releases include the albums Hermann heeßt er! (1986) and Die Königin der Kleinkunst (2005). She died on January 22, 1957, in Bad Reichenhall, Bavaria, West Germany, leaving a legacy commemorated by memorials.
