For two decades, Rafael Anton Irisarri has been a defining voice in contemporary ambient and experimental music. An Ibero-American composer, producer, and mastering engineer of Basque heritage, his work is built from processed guitars, spectral density, and immersive sound environments where resonance carries emotional weight. Releasing internationally since the 2000s, including as The Sight Below on Ghostly International, he has established a language rooted in duration, harmonic saturation, and spatial awareness. Founder of Black Knoll Studio in New York, his parallel work as an engineer and producer informs a meticulous approach to tone, structure, and scale. As a composer, Irisarri has developed a body of work grounded in a musical language that pairs fragility with tension. He works primarily with electric guitar, extending it through bowed techniques and layered processing, alongside a wider family of strings, synths, piano, and voice. A Fragile Geography (2015) marked a new beginning, followed by The Shameless Years (2017), and Solastalgia (2019), rooted in ecological grief and the loss of landscape. Since 2023, he has maintained an ongoing creative partnership with Italian composer Abul Mogard, releasing Impossibly Distant, Impossibly Close (2024) and Where Light Pauses in the Silence of the Sun (2026) performing together across Europe. Ostinato figures and looping structures recur throughout his music, mirroring the cyclical nature of history and the repetitions that define lived experience. His music resists the instant gratification and dopamine-driven impulses of the attention economy, building slowly through subtle variations in timbre, gathering into a cohesive whole. His latest solo album, Points of Inaccessibility, was conceived during a residency at Utrecht’s former Pieter Baan Centre, a psychiatric prison whose charged architecture shaped the recording process. The work deepens his long-standing preoccupation with memory, distance, and silence, transforming space itself into a compositional force.
