Werner Jacob was a German organist, composer and lecturer born in 1938 in Thuringia. He studied the organ with Walter Kraft and composition with Wolfgang Fortner at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, where he completed his examinations in 1961. After holding positions in Freiburg and Nuremberg, Jacob served as the kantor at the church of St. Sebald in Nuremberg from 1969 to 1990, later becoming the titular organist. Between 1986 and 2003, he was the artistic director of the Internationale Orgelwoche Nürnberg. As a teacher, he led the church music department at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart. His discography included more than 90 recordings featuring the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Max Reger. Jacob received numerous honors including the Prize of the City of Nuremberg (1983) and the Bundesverdienstkreuz (1992). He died in 2006.
