"Starburst Enterprise Review"
What do you like best about Starburst?

We originally had our data lake built on a Hive engine. One of the tings we like about Starburst Enterprise is the improvement it provided to our consumers by providing a powerful distributed SQL query engine built on a Trino engine, allowing fast querying across diverse data sources.

We also shifted away from an Enterprise Data Lake secured Privacera Ranger to a Data Mesh architecture governed by AWS Lake Formation. From a business and customer support perspective, Starburst were attentive to our technical/business requirements, feature requests, etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

One area of improvement for Starburst is to consider the rollout of GA features after undergoing somewhat further rigorous/comprehensive use case testing. Or alternatively, perhaps be more mindful with the language of GA vs Public Preview vs Private Preview. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Accelerates Hive Queries, Easy to Maintain"
What do you like best about Starburst?

I use Starburst primarily for querying data from Hive, and I really appreciate its ability to speed up queries significantly. This acceleration feature is particularly valuable to me as it enhances the efficiency of processing large datasets. I also love how simple it is to maintain Starburst, which makes ongoing administration hassle-free. The initial setup was very easy, which is a big plus for anyone looking to implement new software with minimal downtime. I find it integrates well with other tools like Tableau and custom tools we rely on, which facilitates a smooth workflow within our data analysis and visualization processes. What do you dislike about Starburst?

I find the connectivity to Dataproc Hive on GCP problematic with Starburst. There is also a lack of advanced network setups specifically in GCP GKE environments, which presents challenges. Additionally, the documentation sometimes falls short, as it can be lacking or even incorrect at times. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Outstanding Performance and Savings with Robust Governance"
What do you like best about Starburst?

The query performance, governance features, and cost savings stand out when compared to other solutions such as AWS Athena. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

The user interface could use a more modern design and enhancements to make it easier to use. Additionally, the existing documentation is too basic for enterprise needs; users would benefit from more advanced, production-level examples instead of just beginner tutorials. Finally, the consumption-based pricing model makes it difficult to predict monthly expenses with accuracy. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Streamlined Data Analytics with Excellent Support"
What do you like best about Starburst?

I like how Starburst gives us more insight about the query execution plan. It's really helpful in understanding how a query is going to execute. It also has lineage and audit features. I find it user-friendly for managing data security with RBAC and based security controls, which are necessary for data governance. Starburst is especially useful for running complex queries, especially when dealing with multiple joins and data source systems. It supports multiple languages, which I find very valuable. Setting up Starburst wasn't complex, and I had good support from the solution architect, which made the process successful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

Sometimes I face challenges with the query editor. Whenever we have a big source code, it's not big enough to troubleshoot and run the query faster compared to a traditional SQL editor. I would definitely give feedback to the internal team to make it more user-friendly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Effortless Data Federation and Granular Governance Made Easy"
What do you like best about Starburst?

Effortlessly federating data is a standout feature, and the ability to apply data governance with a high level of granularity is impressive. I also appreciate how easy it is to use overall. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

One drawback is the absence of a built-in data processing and orchestration mechanism. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Effortless AI Agent Creation with Robust Features"
What do you like best about Starburst?

While creating AI agents its very easy to use starburst it already has most support and nice number of features. If you want to let AI agents use your data there are built in plugins controlling governance and ease. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

Lack of community support and reliability. Most of the companies prefer to go to Azure and have their own AI solution because main thing is about reliabilty. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Starburst Enterprise deployment"
What do you like best about Starburst?

Starburst improve the response time and incorporated AI/ML capability. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

My previous comment still stands. In addition, while Starburst has improved response time, certain connectors, like SQL Server, is single-threaded so the performance is lacking in comparison to other connectors that can do parallelization. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Megan Kemphaus of Starburst

Hi John, thank you for your review! It's great to hear the benefits you're seeing regarding the query speed and how that's helped with some of the challenges you were facing before in your data environment. It sounds like the TAMs are supporting you where the customizations can take some time - we're appreciative of that feedback and will share it to both the Customer Success team as well as the Product team.

"Now we can work much more efficiently with data"
What do you like best about Starburst?

Starburst has the speed of serving complex queries. I’ve found that it optimizes query execution whether the data is in multiple systems. And it helped reduce the hassle of asking people for data and querying it manually, which had skewed to a massive part of our time. Having the ability to take complex join queries, without worrying about movement of data has really elevated our workflow to be able to see more analysis instead of thinking about logistics. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

To be fair, Starburst is a very full featured product and pretty intuitive but some things are not so intuitive as I’d like them to be so troubleshooting can be more difficult. Moreover, when it comes to distributed query engines, those teams that are new to them will need some time to really get a whole picture of all the choices here offered. Occasionally, on a problem, I get so lost in the docs and have to dig it that we can’t work. This could certainly be made clearer and more accessible. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Our team finally gains access to all data in one place"
What do you like best about Starburst?

The best thing about Starburst is how it manages such complicated data environments. It lets us query data in multiple system data, AWS and google cloud without having to worry about integration issues. It’s also fast, and that worked even with large amounts of data, which is the performance, and the results. Making our data access just much easier and indispensable for our analytics team. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Starburst?

For some reason, the initial setup for Starburst is the main downside I’ve found to it. It’s strong, but a lot of configuration is needed when combining with other data sources. Assuring that everything is attached and working in concert can take some time. Furthermore, there are some issues with dealing with bring complex queries, which can cause a performance hiccup when trying to pull all the data from multiple sources at once.
