Of all the Goodreads lists in existence, this is the one that reminds me that the world isn't a terrible place filled with horrible people who I just want to shake until they understand whatever it is that they're not getting that's so obvious it's infuriating. Thank you, whoever created this list. THANK YOU. Favorite list ever.

wuthering hights? really? ok... critics all over the world twist and turn at this one
Wuthering Heights is frustrating, not because it isn't an incredibly well-written, iconoclastic book that deserves all the adulation in the world (it is fantastic and the Bronte sisters have done more for women's lit than can be quantified), but because everyone thinks it's this amazing "love story" when it is anything but. It is a book about horrible people doing horrible things and it's an expression of misplaced piety, racism/ class-ism, and obsession with lily-white feminine beauty. It's incredibly infuriating. Worse, the movie versions with the happily ever after nonsense and the "tall, dark, and handsome" romantic hero characterization of Heathcliff. ::vomit::
You are saying that Wuthering Heights may be on this list because people don't know what it stands for? it seems to me it's not the "love books that piss you off". :)
i don't agree with Nietzsche philosophy, he was a misogynistic demented man who lived in his mom's basement and had a profound hatred towards God. As a Christian i should say he is pissing me off. that doesn't mean i cant appreciate the value of his writing. he created a whole new philosophical avenue.
such as him, Bronte dared of speaking about all those bad things you mentioned.
i don't approve that this is a romantic book but i wouldn't put it on such list.
sorry i got a little carried away:)

That's OK. I think people do know what it stands for...at least some people and, like me, it pisses them off. It pisses me off that people think it's a love story but, for me at least, it's bigger than that. I love the book but I hate the characters. I hate the narrator even though she's pious, kind, and simple. I hate Catherine, even though she's a product of her rearing. I hate Linton because he's so damned naive and posh and bigoted. I hate Heathcliff because he never morally rose above the way the Hinley abused him. It's a fantastic novel about horrible people. It pisses me off. But I love it anyway. I love discussing it and arguing about it and I see the value in it as a classical work of literature. There are some books on here that piss me off because they're just terrible books. Some of those books are loved, others aren't. I think we can all love/ hate books for a variety of reasons. Considering my profession, I think I'm in a position to hate books because they are misunderstood on a widescale, though. Particularly classics that everyone reads and is taught.
