I read my first Christine Feehan book in 1999 (in high school), when Dark Prince was first released. Since that time, I've read the majority of her Dark, Leopard People, and Ghostwalker series.
I can't remember the most recent release of hers that I've read since then; but let me tell you, she definitely seems to have gotten hit by the Kristen Ashley stick in the interim. So much chin lifting, clipped speech, and "you scraped me off" slang. If you know you know.
But I digress and I don't really care.
This was me when it became very clear that this was apparently the spinoff of an entire series I have not read:

And then the rest of the time.

I'm the dude in the back in case that is unclear.
Simply put:
This was a train wreck I couldn't look away from. So messy, so insta-love, so many unexplained magical abilities and unearned dedication on the part of the "heroine."
It was not done well, to be honest. In fact, at about 35% I only forced myself to keep going because I paid $9.99 for this catastrophe. A sum of money I rarely spend on an ebook these days, so I was damned if I didn't finish it, despite any misgivings.
And somewhere along the way...

I couldn't stop. And have already purchased book two.

I thought the commentary on motherhood and regret was well done and it was the main reason I picked this book as my Book of the Month. So I was3 Stars
I thought the commentary on motherhood and regret was well done and it was the main reason I picked this book as my Book of the Month. So I was satisfied on that end. And I do think the author is a talented writer in many ways; however, I thought the ending sucked and that her male characters were very flat. And if you picked this up for the “thriller” aspect, expect zero thrills. In fact, I think it was misplaced to put this in the thriller aisle. ...more

Sadly, this final installment was my least favorite in the series. Without including spoilers, I will just say that, if you know my stance on the dead ex and the battle of consolation prize-ism, this book didn't quite pull it off enough for my comfort.
(view spoiler)[Talon absolutely chooses Calista over his dead wife...I just feel like the decision was halfway made by the dead wife pushing for his happiness and not Talon overtly choosing Calista. Don't get me wrong, he chose her...I'm just selfish and wanted that choice to be more concrete, I guess. (hide spoiler)]
^That is what really took this particular book down from 4 stars.
Otherwise, this series as a whole was chef's kiss for me. Definitely 4+ as an overall series rating. I loved Talon and Calista and the way their relationship and story evolved over the course of the story.
I highly recommend to those who enjoy romantasy. ...more

I was so intrigued by the premise and absolutely loved this cover. I love books about messy people doing messy things for messy reasons. But t2 Stars
I was so intrigued by the premise and absolutely loved this cover. I love books about messy people doing messy things for messy reasons. But the actuality is that the blurb was basically the book itself. And nothing more than surface level fodder is employed to fully flesh out the question posited: “…do we really want our fantasies to come true?
This book was rudderless and many of the characters - namely the children - felt like mere props. Cora is described by both others and herself as being interesting and witty. Someone people are drawn to. And there is some witty dialogue on her part. sure; but her character is otherwise flat and seemingly without personality. Her ennui pointless and unearned.
And the ending was lackluster to boot. Too bad too, cause there were spikes of greatness so close to breaking through. While this didn’t hit for me, I would be willing to try something else by this author as I did see potential. The threads just didn’t quite come together on this one....more

Maybe it’s just my mood right now, but none of these characters felt badass…and I think they were supposed to feel very badass, so there’s that.
Otherwise, I was just kind of bored. Maybe if I had read the series prior to this (which I finally figured out existed when we met all of Gigi’s family and the couples therein) I would have liked this more. I usually like this author, so it’s probably just me. Oh well. No biggie. ...more

I am a HUGE Ana Zaires fan and will literally read anything she writes. A feeling that had to sustain me through the long wait for this book.
I mean, seriously though, there was a substantial wait between this book and book one.
How long you ask?
Three YEARS, people.
Now, yes, yes, I know. Compared to a Patrick Rothfuss or G.R.R Martin wait, this is nothing.
But in the romance world? It felt like an eternity.
I was fine, though. Totally stoic about it.
But I digress.
When this ARC hit my kindle, I was stoked. And also afraid, being that the wait build-up created a huge inner hype...which is not always good, as that's a hard thing to live up to.
But thankfully, while not as amazing as some of my favorite Zaires works (looking at you and you), it was still really good.
The story picks up right where the last book ended and I fell right back into the story. I was kind of worried where Zaires would go with it, being that she had kind of backed herself into a corner in the second book. But alas, fear not, trust in the Zaires.
I loved Alexei and Alina and I thought this was a great end to their story. It felt a lot shorter than some of Zaires' other final series books...and has a lot less angst. But again, I really enjoyed it and was happy with the way everything unfolded.
As always, can't wait for whatever she offers us next.

This had so much potential...the world was interesting and the premise was solid. I really liked the setup idea, the t2.5 - 3 Stars, Kindly Rounded Up
This had so much potential...the world was interesting and the premise was solid. I really liked the setup idea, the two main characters had great chemistry from the onset, and simply put, I will literally read anything about omegas/alphas/heats/mating. Every. Time.
The problem for me was the execution. The world-building was not that great and I would have loved a little bit more background on how alphas could be both human and shifter. Maybe then I would have understood why the shifter alphas (who were described as being bigger and stronger) seemed to have such a hard hard whipping the asses of the humans. I mean, come on, they almost seemed inept with how much around and around they did trying to hide from them.
And then the humans group kept destroying their shit and hurting some of their shifter members. It just didn't make sense. I feel like there were high numbers in the shifter Knight gang, and we've established they are physically stronger...so, what are we doing here? Fucking kill them already. It made them seem weak bumbling idiots to me. So frustrating.
That and the female lead showing up to the big fight at the end (a classic too stupid to live female move) really brought this down for me. Kind of a bummer, but it's all good. Next....more

This was better than the last two and I enjoyed it for sure. I didn’t love that the hero seemed to fit the heroine’s idea of her dream guy more than anything else, but I did think they had a great connection. And I loved how hard he finally gave in to her. Definitely more what I love about DD Prince, especially when compared to the last two books in the series.
Overall, an enjoyable smut mc read. I’ll continue with the series. ...more
