I hoped to, but didn't expect to. Besides that, it's a good non-fiction book. It is informative, has a story to make you want to keep reading. And a friend listens to them asMaybe falsely, but I get the impression that this lit-rpg thing is a trend now, so I wanted to read some sample of it. And a friend listens to them as a guilty pleasure, complaining about them all the time. So I picked it up based on their recommendation that this is good for the genre. But oh, boy, it still feels so unpolished and not like a proper book. I feel like I'm listening to the almost literal posts from the forum where they were posted or something. Chapters end with one thing, then next ones start slightly differently, ignoring the discrepancy like it's normal to ret-con previous chapter endings. There's chapters that feel like filler episodes in TV series, and I'm definitely not used to that in books. And the main heroine, Erin, is annoying. I tried to forgive some of her stupidity (like, omg, how can I have menstruation if I don't have plastic pads to put in panties) to being a young person, but overall I feel like we think of her as the innkeeper that asks "what do you want?" anytime anyone enters her inn, and wonders "why isn't anyone visiting?" when they don't. I dunno, Erin, would you want to go eat at a place where the keeper is surprised almost to the point of being rude to her potential customers?...more
Lovely characters in a pretty classic fantasy story. The person who suggested it to me was a little bit disappointed that everything was precisely as Lovely characters in a pretty classic fantasy story. The person who suggested it to me was a little bit disappointed that everything was precisely as he'd expect from an Abercrombie though. Since this is my first successful book read, I didn't mind. I loved how the book managed to show off the characters growth in some not too obtrusive ways. And that the characters did grow, at least the party as a whole developed....more

I remember wondering why some people from our world history got genderbent in that world, but aside from that - I loved the characters, the hardships, the solutions. Not an entirely happy ending, if I remember correctly, but that's a big part of why I enjoyed the book more, it doesn't feel too easy or fan-service-y....more

Like, in terms of the vibe, this felt again a more appropriate blend of silly fun adventure, earnest hopefulness and sad realities, not necessarily in that order. And this book too did the shtick of "let's start every scene with the same thing that the previous scene ended with", but somehow it stopped grating on my nerves so much. And basically, because of the second book not being so great, I thought this one will be a little bit worse still, but it was not. Not at all. I kind of feel like re-reading the whole trilogy again just to make sure, and then preach it to all my reading friends....more

Every single scene change started with the same concept, word, something that the previous scene ended with. It became so grating... Otherwise it felt a bit like basically the same book again, but worse somehow? Still fun, but doesn't feel like a possibility of becoming iconic. I hope it's not too harsh, because it is a fun listen (except for the scene transitions). I guess it's tough to land the balance between lighthearted fun and seriousness, and the end of the previous book set up a bit of a serious tone, and this book did not follow....more

It's funny, it has good interpersonal relationships, it's great. While obviously it's not Terry Pratchett, it slightly reminded me of maybe the guards stories, I don't know. In any case, I found it to be a really fun and enjoyable read....more

Not light in the sense that the hopelessness pretty much bears out, except maybe not in another way. I liked it. Still am a Tchaikovsky fan....more

Even has a passable ending for a part of a series book. I like me a good "they are not us, they don't think like us" alien story, and this one is.
