And Another Thing... (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #6)

I don't read many books that scarcely deserve only a single star, mostly I give them up. But having paid full price for this hardback, and having been such a fan of the Hitchhikers Guide series I made myself finish it. I wouldn't let myself read any other books until this was finished, and its taken a while.
I thought that the quality of the writing, the stale gags and the constant and irrelevant interruptions of 'Guide' entries were the pits. It read like amateur fan fiction by a group of collaborators who would each write a paragraph or more and then leave it for the next person. I cannot imagine what Douglas Adam's estate thought authorising and endorsing this dreadful book - money I suppose.
I've never read any Eoin Colfer before, although I know he is a successful YA author and perhaps that's why the writing struck me as so shallow and immature, but whatever... I just didn't enjoy it and that's that.

I can't believe someone thought they could add to Adams' canon. It's just insulting.

Yes, it really was. I thought the film was crap too. But the BBC series which I saw a couple of years ago was amazing.
Colfer's children's books are OK (not brilliant, but not bad). This is pretty bad - and yet it did make me reread Adams' originals and bring back happy memories.

This was just a really, really bad idea from the off. H2G2 was such a personal project for Adams, infused with his character. It'd be like someone trying to write a new Discworld novel.. it makes no sense.(And I love the 80s TV series too! All the computer stuff depicting the Guide was actually animation. It still looks great.)
Alexander wrote: "(And I love the 80s TV series too! All the computer stuff depicting the Guide was actually animation. It still looks great.).."I saw it a while back. It was great. The acting was between tongue in cheek and serious, which was perfect for the book. Everyone should watch it!
I’m also a big fan of the Hitchhikers series, and Douglas Adams. I’ve had this book on my shelves for years, but I can’t seem to be able to read it because I’m afraid it will not live up to the rest of the series. Sounds like it doesn’t.
Avoid it, Hákon. I wish I had. I don't understand why Adams' family endorsed this, Even Adams should possibly have stopped the series earlier, and Colfer's YA roots show. It's a pale shadow of the ones we know and love.
Hákon wrote: "I’ve had this book on my shelves for years, but I can’t seem to be able to read it because I’m afraid it will not live up to the rest of the series.."As Cecily says, avoid it. It's awful. I also agree with Cecily in thinking that Adams should have stopped sooner. I think he wrote one too many books in the series, but overall it hangs together.
Hákon wrote: "Yeah, I think I may end up giving it away without reading it."It would be a good Christmas present for someone you have to give a gift too but don't really like very much. But not to someone who gives you books!
I was think more along the lines of putting it in the Icelandic version of the Little Free Library, but your idea is good too. :-)

Hákon wrote: "I was think more along the lines of putting it in the Icelandic version of the Little Free Library, but your idea is good too. :-)"There is always that person who doesn't deserve money being spent on them for a present. You know, the person that gives you something that looks like it came from the last day of a sale, or they got a couple of Christmas's ago.
Helio wrote: "What! There is more than one book?"HItchhikers's Guide is 5 books. The first one, this one is fantastic, the second nearly as good and same for the third. The fourth is ok and the fifth is absolutely dire.
I recall finding out that this exists and thinking "I'm not even going to try". The beginning trilogy is excellent, but the 4th and 5th installments were nothing to write home about. Can't see it improving after that, especially with a different author.
Victoria wrote: "The beginning trilogy is excellent, but the 4th and 5th installments were nothing to write home about. Can't see it i..."We agree on that. There is another awful one, Peter Pan in Scarlet that I recall was just as bad. No magic.
Gayle wrote: "Also fan of Hitchhiker's Guide! Miss watching it."It ended back in the 80s! That's a long time to miss a show. ;-)
