really liked it

I really enjoyed this, it was funny, beautifully written, I was drawn into the story from the start and it’s a gentle satire which I thought made it’s points well.
Wormold, the central character is an English vacuum cleaner seller with a teenage daughter with expensive tastes living in Cuba. He’s almost unwittingly recruited by Hawthorne to be a spy and the story unfolds around him with lots of unseen consequences. I loved the ending, it seemed so appropriate!

Sarah Great review, Janelle! I love Greene's writing, but have never read this one - adding it to the TBR now!

Janelle Thanks Sarah! I need to read more of him, I’ve only read The Quiet American previously.

Joseph Sciuto Short but very nice review. I thought the book was really good, too.

Janelle Thanks Joseph :)

Mark Porton A 'gentle satire' is a nice way to describe it Janelle, great review!

Janelle Thanks Mark :)

path I came to this novel after some of Greene’s more … dour and dramatic novels and the satire caught me off guard. It wasn’t what I expected and I think that tinted my review a bit too much. I might need to give this one another go sometime. Does Greene do satire elsewhere?

I’m not sure they’d be called satires but The Comedians and The Ministry of Fear have quite dark themes. The only other Greene I’ve read is The Quiet American so I haven’t read that many really.
