Born and raised in the Tampa Bay area, Sandra Hutchison survived her parents' move to the small town of Greenfield, Massachusetts and eventually stopped sulking about it, though it's possible she's still working it out in her fiction. She currently lives in upstate New York.

A former adjunct professor, high school English teacher, acquisitions editor, marketing manager, creative director, and freelance copywriter, Sandra founded Sheer Hubris Press in 2013 to put all those skills to work at the same time.

If you're trying to reach her, you must defeat your auto-correct and insist on HutchISon (not HutchINson!) to search or email her at sandrahutchison at sheerhubris.com.

Although commenting on Amazon reviews is apparently unseemly, she welcome

I can understand wanting to leave that relationship where it was. Plenty of my friends agree with you. My mom, too. :) I was inspired to that resolution by Alice Sebold's riveting memoir "Lucky." Like Sebold, Molly (eventually) takes charge of her own healing. And I also wanted to show that relationships are often more complex than outsiders -- who are even quicker to judge today than they were back then -- might assume. In any case, thanks so much for reviewing! It's always good to hear what people think.(less)

(I think!) I'm about three quarters of the way through the first draft and taking next semester off to finish it ... so, it depends on how long that and the revisions take. It's called "Bardwell's Folly: A Love Story" and it's about the Yankee daughter of a famous Southern writer coming to terms with her heritage via her own social media disaster. (The first two chapters are in the end of "Missionary Dating," which is free for a few days more.)(less)

Goodbye 2022, hello 2023

Happy New Year!

I’m not going to use this post to hate on 2022. After all, it could have been 2020 or 2021. If you weren’t in Ukraine or otherwise afflicted by tragedy, things generally got better: the world reopened, which was at least good for those without crappy immune systems in the household.

I taught Freshman English again, which was fun, although the pandemic has clearly left its mark on stu

I almost gave up on this audiobook, even though I find this author reliably compelling and the narrator completely appropriate for this title. The heroine's life is pretty unremittingly bleak for the first 25-30%. This is, fundamentally, a book about ...more

“I do not think I ever opened a book in my life which had not something to say upon woman's inconstancy. Songs and proverbs, all talk of woman's fickleness. But perhaps you will say, these were all written by men."

"Perhaps I shall. Yes, yes, if you please, no reference to examples in books. Men have had every advantage of us in telling their own story. Education has been theirs in so much higher a degree; the pen has been in their hands. I will not allow books to prove anything.”
Jane Austen, Persuasion

“To love is good, too: love being difficult. For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.”
Rainer Maria Rilke

“And then once in the music storage room. It was cold. The room was small with thin gray carpet and I cried after in my bed thinking of how sad the violins looked alone in the corner. It was embarrassing to have sex in front of the wrong things, especially a violin, which was so dignified at every angle”
Alison Espach, The Adults

“Owen Meany believed that “coincidence” was a stupid, shallow refuge sought by stupid, shallow people who were unable to accept the fact that their lives were shaped by a terrifying and awesome design – more powerful and unstoppable than the Yankee Flyer. (a train)”
John Irving, A Prayer for Owen Meany

“You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.”
