Hon. Stephen Kaus (Ret.) Joins JAMS in San Francisco
San Francisco – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Stephen Kaus (Ret.) has joined its panel. Judge Kaus joins JAMS with over 50 years of legal experience, including serving for over a decade on the Alameda Superior Court.
While on the bench, Judge Kaus managed a direct calendar department with hundreds of cases, overseeing complex multiparty and two-party disputes while conducting numerous trials and settlement conferences. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he served for 20 years in private practice as a partner at Cooper, White & Cooper LLP, where he represented media, cable TV and telecom clients in employment, contract and franchising disputes.
Based in the San Francisco Resolution Center , Judge Kaus will serve as a mediator, arbitrator and court-appointed neutral (referee/special master), handling antitrust, bankruptcy, banking, business and commercial, civil rights, class actions, construction defects, employment, environmental, government, health care, insurance, personal injury, professional liability and real property matters. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

Judge Kaus began his legal career as a deputy public defender in Contra Costa County, a role he served in from 1974 to 1980. From there, he transitioned to private practice and served as a named partner at Kaus, Kerr & Wagstaffe. He represented professionals, including engineers, attorneys and judges, handling construction, insurance and commercial disputes, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in multiple complex cases. Judge Kaus is also a dedicated leader in the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), serving on its board of directors.

Judge Kaus earned his B.A., cum laude , from UCLA and his J.D. from the UC Berkeley School of Law.
