All Smithsonian museums in the Washington, D.C., area and the National Zoo will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11 due to snow.

When you visit the Smithsonian, you are entering the world’s largest museum complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. Eleven museums are located along the National Mall in Washington, D.C., six others and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are nearby, two are in New York City, and two more are in the works.

Free admission at all locations except the Cooper Hewitt in New York City.

Smithson’s Gift Inspired a Unique Public-Private Partnership

James Smithson, the founding donor of the Smithsonian, bequeathed his estate to establish the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., “for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” Smithson’s gift inspired a unique public-private partnership that leverages an extraordinary commitment from Congress to activate additional private support to connect with more Americans.
