Carved into the mountainside on the Alóag–Santo Domingo highway, where the Ecuadorian highlands drop toward the coast, there's a face that catches everyone by surprise: The Devil. Twenty meters tall and appearing suddenly around a sharp curve, this behemothic beast has haunted Zunfo since his childhood, while passing it in his grandfather's Datsun pickup truck. What struck him most, years later, was learning it had been carved in secret by a self-taught tractor operator with no formal training and no one's permission. A covert, colossal act. The phrase etched into its base, El Poder Brutal (Brutal Power), became the title, the concept, and the emotional spine of his debut album.

Zunfo arrived in Denver from Quito having consumed the global electronic music scene entirely through a screen, studying it from thousands of miles away. Moving to Colorado collapsed that distance, placing him physically inside the culture he had only ever observed. El Poder Brutal is the document of that collision: a global electronic language filtered through an Ecuadorian sensibility pressing back against its new environment.

This is not a record that was made to be released. These tracks, most of them built nearly five years ago, were private explorations, experiments with no audience in mind. That freedom is audible in its unique entanglement between distorted Afro-Ecuadorian rhythms and bass music elements, ranging from deep 140 subs to minimal dnb. The result is something that resists easy categorization: experimental electronics shaped by a perspective that the scene rarely hears from. Some records are constructed. This one was excavated.
