Scumbags. Being taken, no Miranda rights read.

Miranda basically hasn't been a thing in a while though... https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/supreme-court-rejects-promise-miranda-rights

There's no repercussion for a pig to not read or even provide Miranda rights.

Another officer says, “They’re starting to resist more now,” to which an officer replies: “We’re going to end up shooting some of them.”

That feels too casual of a conversation when discussing fucking murder.

Also, I believe it should be illegal for law enforcement to be incentived to make arrests. If I were in a position to write laws, I'd make it illegal for cops to get bonuses. Fuck the idea they get more money to ruin people's lives.

If there have to be bonuses, they should be reserved for when a situation is successfully de-escalated without violence. I wouldn't have a problem incentivizing a cop for defusing a situation properly. The fact that they still get paid bonuses after doing something shitty is where I take issue. And getting paid leave after killing someone? That's straight-up encouragement right there.

This is why we need to start shooting them. They're lawless criminals and we are merely defending ourselves.

What are you waiting for?

Nothing. I've increased my gun ownership threefold and am getting my concealed carry permit in two weeks.

Oh, so you're telling people to start breaking the law why you yourself follow it and don't risk anything? Clever.

They never said to start breaking the law. They said people should start defending themselves, which is legal.

Yeah, I read it as "if I'm threatened, I'll respond in kind. You should do the same." Not "go out and murder cops right now."

Yeah, because shooting at police detailing people is legal...

Look, I 100% agree police is in the wrong here but the way the legal system is set up you can argue that in court. They detain you, put you in front of a judge and if you can demonstrate that your detention wasn't legal you will be freed. The law in no way allows you to shoot cops because you think they don't have the right to do something. Telling people to shoot cops is advocating for breaking the law, pure and simple. It's not for me to tell if US is at the stage when civil was is the only way out and you shoot just start killing each other but don't pretend it would somehow be legal.

I love it when a single comment is enough for me to know that blocking someone is the appropriate thing to do.

A highway patrol officer asked everyone in the van to identify themselves, then called for backup. Officers with US border patrol arrived on the scene.

Video footage of the incident captured by Laynez-Ambrosio, an 18-year-old US citizen, appears to show a group of officers in tactical gear working together to violently detain the three men*, two of whom are undocumented. They appear to use a stun gun on one man, put another in a chokehold and can be heard telling Laynez-Ambrosio: “You’ve got no rights here. You’re a migo, brother.” Afterward, agents can be heard bragging and making light of the arrests, calling the stun gun use “funny” and quipping: “You can smell that … $30,000 bonus.”

From watching videos like this, something is obvious to me. Half of a cop's job is seeking moral justification from the in-group for their inhuman shit.

Underground railroad, anyone?

You agree to be a member of the community, you agree to our rules. Do not call for violence.

Arguing with the mods just makes you look like this:

https://youtu.be/djfZnls6lWE#t=4m53s

Well, I disagree that comparison is valid. When they commit violence, can I call for self defense? How long do you think you can stop the call for violence against the violent before the violent show up at your door?

What happens in the real world has no bearing on Lemmy. Do not call for violence here. It's a super simple rule.

But what happens on lemmy can have an impact on the real world. Just like these police. When you have a job that negatively affects other people, you don’t just get to go home at the end of the day and not have that follow you.

What happens in the real world is outside the rules and restrictions of Lemmy, here, we do not allow calls for violence.

Our house, our rules.

Fuck any rule that aids fascism. And anyone who aids a fascist should get a knock on their door.

So you're a fascist, got it.

So the rule needs to be changed. Deal with it.

Go to a different lemmy server and block lemmy.world from your client. These tankies can moderate themselves all day long.

Fortunately you don't get to make the rules here.

Another officer says, “They’re starting to resist more now,” to which an officer replies: “We’re going to end up shooting some of them.”

This quote stood out to me. It seems like ICE agents are preparing themselves psychologically to begin killing people.

170b ICE budget for a million deports, so it should be 170k each, now these low level nazi doing the actual dirty work only get 30k for three, so 1/17 of total. Wondering where does the rest go. So much corruption there.

The immigration agent was correct. You have no rights unless you demand them and defend them for everyone. If you're at home feeling like this doesn't affect you, I'll remind you that it's not a long poem.

It's not illegal for law enforcement to lie to you even if they know it's a lie. Isn't this a great system? Happy Friday!

Which is a huge reason not to talk to law enforcement. They can lie but you can't.

This is so stupid IMO, police is an authority, and you should be able to trust them.
But they are allowed to set traps for you, and then they act surprised when people don't trust them. 🙄

bottom line: never trust any authority. there may be authorities that help you resist worse authorities, but that doesn't make them good, that makes them a temporary expedient on the path to freedom. sideeye them the entire time you're working with them

When I was a kid in the 60s, I remember hearing calls to "Question Authority," and I took it to heart, and it became a part of my personality. It's natural for me to be skeptical of anything I hear from any authority.

Any authority that is legitimately good and has your interests at heart doesn't need you to give it trust. It will earn your respect and support, and trust should be unnecessary because transparency would make the "...but verify" part effortless.

My doctor is an authority. Can I trust her?

trust her expertise, but not her authority. authority is power over another person and there is a history of doctors abusing their power over patients (in particular against LGBTQIA+ and indigenous people)

That's where it all started to break down. You've all been asking for this shit to happen by not holding your leadership accountable, who in turn are supposed to hold those who enforce their laws accountable. You don't ha e either of those things in the USA and now you've got this. It's been waiting on the wings for decades, but the erosion of democracy started long long ago.

I agree, but you make false assumptions about my nationality, honey traps and baiting people into criminal acts are not legal police methods in my country, and police is way more trusted here than in USA.
Although the trust has declined for the past half century, incidentally also a period where police powers have been increased, and police budgets have decreased.
In the 70's the view of police was overwhelmingly positive here, now it's more like average.

USA however is a dystopia of legal hypocrisy and systemic injustice, and police overreaction due to incompetence.

There's a reason many of our police are dressed like spec-ops soldiers and drill-sargeants unlike the approachable civil peace-officers of western Europe.

Seems like a good place to remind everybody in the US to watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-7o9xYp7eE

A truly great video and I second that ALL USAmericans should watch.

And speaking of Friday, it's time for the weekly reminder! (CW: swearing)

But... It appears they did not read him his Miranda rights, which is a constitutional requirement and they absolutely apply if he's a citizen. From the sound of it, they're in clear violation of that.

People always get confused by this.

The ‘Miranda rights’ are actually called the ‘Miranda warning’. Their purpose is to prevent people from self-incrimination: you have the right to remain silent and talk to a lawyer before answering questions. It also warns that anything you DO say can be used against you.

Now, the thing that people get wrong is: these warnings only apply when an officer starts asking you questions related to a potential crime. You still are legally required to cooperate and to give your name and personal details regardless.

So, an officer can legally arrest you without reading the Miranda warning. But if say, a detective will question you later, they still need to give you those warnings. Basically, the only reason most cops read them while arresting is so it’s covered in case they or anyone down the line DOES ask questions.

Not having your ‘Miranda rights’ read is not a get out of jail free card. At best, it could render some evidence inadmissible in court.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miranda_warning

Thanks, that was a great explanation!

A constitutional requirement for what? Answer that and you'll understand why it doesn't matter if they're in "clear violation."

Knowing what border crossings and check points are like; 100% believe the kid.

E: I once had a buddy tell me they had him in a cold af room to get a confession for cocaine trafficking. They had some pink liquid that proved it was him. In a moment of clarity between imprisonment threats he realized if they could prove it they'd just cuff him and not need a confession. Bro had some old battery in his trunk that had some corrosion. We think they found some of that and perhaps that's what they tested to get the pink liquid. We're both white too, so for sure getting the polite treatment.

they're just sadistic regardless of if they want to get a confession from you or not. i was a teenage runaway from an abusive family home and they stripped me to my boxers and stuck me in a freezing cell the entire day after arresting me for being a "vagrant" before returning me to my abusers. fuck the police and all such "officers".

Laynez-Ambrosio was charged with obstruction without violence and sentenced to 10 hours of community service and a four-hour anger management course.

Wtf

Later in the footage, the officers move on to general celebration – “Goddamn! Woo! Nice!” – and talk of the potential bonus they’ll be getting: “Just remember, you can smell that [inaudible] $30,000 bonus.”

If my tax dollars are paying out huge bonuses to thugs, I'm pretty mad about it. Let's assign those bonuses to teachers. Oh, wait. Trump loves the poorly educated (he's said so in a direct quote). They're more easily manipulated by blatant lies. Can't have a population that can think for themselves. Then how would we whip up fear of the "other" and lay all the blame for billionaire capitalists at their door?

More reason to identify these agents cause ya know $30,000 must be somewhere.

You know the funniest part about all this? They are betting on a financial promise made by Donald Trump. The man has a long established reputation for not paying his debts.

They are being awful people, in public, placing themselves in great danger if they are ever identified, for money they likely will never get.

I'd request for payment upfront before arriving at the detention center.

Yea I’m sure the regime would tolerate that.

...there are rules...rules...

Man when you need the secret police apparently theres plenty of Americans lining up for the job.

The SA and NKVD are proud of AmeriKa, WTF, the obese POS, with the shit eating grin, needs some serious PT. I hope Laynez finds a damn good lawyer.

Americans will see this and think "but we can't escalate!"

Its time for s**t to hit the fan, we need a breaking point, the whole world is DONE and fed up with trump o well americans still accept it so yeah

Also demonstrates why other countries actually require officers and agents to actually know the law.
