  • What's the tldr on this dispute? If I've been following the news mega properly, Colombia (historically a dog of the us empire) recently elected (2022) a socdem government (Petro) and Ecuador has a nepo-bananawunderkind neolibfasc president with a social media influencer wife (Noboa).

    What're they disputing?

The trade war between Colombia and Ecuador, two countries with a long and strong commercial relationship, began with the imposition of 30% tariffs by Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, who argued that Colombia was not doing enough on security along the shared border where organized crime groups operate.

In an implicit reference to Colombia, Noboa said it is not possible to reach agreements with a government that does not have “the same commitment” to fighting drug trafficking and organized crime.

In response, Petro said: “The Ecuadorian president insults the Colombian government, which has seized more cocaine than at any time in world history.”

So basically just accusing the south American leftist of narcoterrorism. Where have I heard this one before... not-a-journalist

  • At least two potential 2028 Democratic nominees may have played a role in killing the resolution, with one DNC member telling Politico they received direct calls from the presidential hopefuls expressing concern about the resolution.

The DNC resolutions committee also punted on two other resolutions on recognizing a Palestinian state and conditioning military aid to Israel.

They don't tell who the two potential nominees are.

From the linked politico article, solely including to highlight guy's name

James Zogby — a longtime DNC member and critic of Israel who is president of the Arab American Institute and who sits on Martin’s Middle East Working Group — said the party needs to wake up to voters’ shifting views on Israel.
