This week’s composite stitch is buttonholed herringbone on the TAST 2013 Challenge by SharonB. This was part of an earlier TAST challenge. I had worked a few samples at that time. They are here.
This stitch though interesting, it takes some time to work. And the ideas of varying this stitch are not many at this stage!
Just to kick start the sampler, tried two samples today- wide and narrow versions of this stitch.

This is another modification of squre herringbone stitch and is part of this week’s TAST 2013 challenge by SharonB.
After working square herringbone sampler, I did not enough energy to work this sampler. The treatment with other stitches was already done, so I tried varying the basic square herringbone and the lacing in these samples. on one sample, I worked interlaced stitch.

I tried working some more motifs with this stitch. The motifs
5. In this part of the sampler, Patterns are worked by combining the basic square herringbone in different ways.
6.In this part the square herringbone are worked over other stitches- Algerian eye, sheaf, buttonhole eyelet cup, detached chain, buttonhole square and half chevron.
7. Some more stitch combinations were first worked on paper.
8.These were tried on sampler, the details of other stitches are- fly, detached chain, oyster, pistil, Italian border and triangular feather.
9.These combinations are- french knots, Cretan variation, sheaf variation, double cross and buttonhole wheel variation.
The stitches on these samples are- wheat ear, up and down buttonhole and Algerian eye. The fourth one is formed with four square herringbone stitches.
With these motif variations this stitch sampler is completed –
The square herringbone was an easy stitch and working other stitches with this stitch was interesting. Helped in learning more about creating motifs with stitches.

Muscat is celebrating it’s annual festival this month. We went to Naseem garden yesterday to watch the shows. The laser show and the fireworks were extraordinary, never have I seen anything like this in my life .
The sampler did not progress much today. Just worked two square herringbone stitches, one over the other in different ways.

This week has two stitches on the TAST 2013 challenge by SharonB. One is the basic stitch and the next one is the laced version. The first one is simple, I had tried this as a variation on my herringbone stitch sampler. Today I tried this square herringbone as line stitch.
Today’s work-
Now for the details
1.The square and diamond herringbone stitches are alternated in the first row .the square herringbone stitches are worked in two rows, this sample looks interesting. Long and narrow version of diamond herringbone are worked in the third row.
2a.The bottom part of the diamond herringbone are lengthened in the first row. The second row starts with square herringbone and small diamond herringbones are worked over it.
2b. The completed row
Two versions of diamond herringbone are alternated in the first row. One side of each diamond herringbone is extended and the latter stitches are worked into the former stitches .This pattern forms the second row in this sample piece.

After working on some more samples this week’s triangular feather stitch sampler is completed.
The last part of the sampler-
6. In these rows, the triangles are worked in the same manner, the variations are only on the basic feather stitches. The first row is worked with up and down feather stitch. In the second row, the feather stitches are facing away from each other, making the first feather stitches look like chain stitches [ this detail is to remind me at a later date, the working of this sample] . The third row is worked with knotted feather stitches.
7 .In these samples, other TAST stitches are worked with triangular feather stitches. The other stitches are-french knots and Italian border stitches in the first row, wheat ear and fly stitches in the second row, chain and arrowhead stitch in the third row.
8 .The first row is worked with pistil stitches and sheaf stitches, the second row with herringbone, buttonhole variation and oyster stitches .
Maintaining the triangular part of this stitch I tried working two other stitches. In the third row, with closed buttonhole stitches and in the fourth row with basque stitches. I suppose we can try many options working like this.
With this last sample, the stitch sampler is completed.

I worked some more samples of this stitch today.
3.Three feather stitches are worked on one side in the first row. Worked a single feather stitch and continued with the triangular feather stitch in the second row. Triangular feather stitches worked on both sides in the third row.
4.Two rows of triangular feather stitches are worked together in three different ways in these samples.
5.In the first row, I tried working triangular feather stitches in zigzag way [not very pretty]. The second row is individually worked triangular feather stitches.[ This type of working feather stitches is very common in ethnic Gujarathi embroidery. They form beautiful decorative seam when worked with single strand of white thread.]. And the individual feather stitches are worked one after another in the third row.

This week’s stitch of the TAST challenge by SharonB is triangular feather stitch. I had worked this stitch as a variation of feather stitch on the earlier TAST challenge. I started working on this sampler today,
1.I tried working this stitch by varying the number of stitches and the angles. the first row , is the way the stitch is done on Sharon’s blog. In the second row, I worked single feather stitch on one side. In the third row, the feather stitch which completed the triangle, is worked at right angle.
2.In the first row, I alternated between single and double feather stitches. In the second row, the second feather stitch is extended up to the first feather stitch. The feather stitch making the triangle is worked at right angle in this third row too.

I had seen samples of this stitch worked by other TAST members. Where this stitch looked lovely and had a braided effect. Here, I am still fumbling with the samples. The rest of the sampler-
The details-
6.Basic feather stitch and inverted feather stitch are alternated in the first row, instead of working the feather stitches horizontally, they are worked at an angle in the second row.
7.Dark pink rimjim threads are used to lace and whip these inverted feather stitch rows.
8.The inverted feather stitches are worked angling towards the left in the first row, this is done by working the inverted feather stitches shorter than the feather stitches. In the second row, the feather stitches are worked shorter and the inverted feather stitches are longer, this angles the stitches to the right side. This row seems interesting.
9.I worked two inverted feather stitches into each feather stitch in the first row. After working feather stitch, inverted feather stitches are worked with a different thread in the second row.
After this, my experiments of this stitch are completed. The whole sampler-

This is the second stitch of the TAST 2013 challenge by SharonB. I have never seen or heard of this stitch before. It was really hard to get the direction and the tension of the thread. I had similar problem with open chain stitch, which I have stopped learning! This time there was no such excuse, because the idea to join this challenge was to learn, practice, work samples of the stitches that are part of the challenge.
The learning process toady-
Details-
1.The first three rows my attempts to work this stitch, the threads used are variegated cone threads
2.I got bored with my attempts and started some variations, in the first row, the alternate inverted feather is taken longer the basic inverted feather stitches. The long and shorter version of inverted feather stitches are worked in the second row.
3.I widened the inverted feather stitches in the first row, and worked wide and narrow inverted feather stitches in the second row. At this stage , I don’t care the stitch samples look untidy, just happy to work on this stitch.
4.In the first row, the inverted feather stitches are worked from the midpoint of the basic feather stitch, in this variation, the inverted feather stitches look like loose chains. In the second row, the inverted feather stitches are extended over the feather stitches.
5.I tried working individual inverted feather stitches in step and vertical [messy] inverted feather stitches in a row.
