China’s ‘land aircraft carrier’ charges flying drone with microwave beam (scmp.com)

Scientists in China have demonstrated a wireless power transmission system that uses a ground-based microwave emitter to beam energy to an antenna array mounted on the aircraft’s underside. Importantly, they were able to do this while both the drone and charging system were in motion.

Coming up in my garden right next to some forest (primarily oak mixed with beech, birch, maple) in southwest Sweden. Last year i dug the area out and removed (most) roots. Not much came up but this little sprout. I suppose it could be roots reaching in from the adjacent forest.

‘DRIVE-BY FIREFIGHTER’ [OC]

Community iconc/comicstrips@lemmy.world by
CustardFist@feddit.nl
- - - This is a comic strip - - - We are in the suburbs. John is walking his dog, Dax. A firetruck approaches with its sirens on. Dax is barking. John: EASY DAX. IT’S JUST A FIRETRUCK. A smiling firefighter leans out the passenger window with his hand stuck out. John: OH? HE WANTS A DRIVE-BY HIGH FIVE? WELL... John happily raises his hand, awaiting the high five. Their hands meet. SLAP! But the firefighter grabs John’s hand, dragging him and Dax along next to the speeding firetruck. They arrive at a large house fire. They break with screeching tires. John and Dax tumble forwards, still hanging on the firm grip of the firefighter. Firefighters put a helmet and coat on John. John: BUT BUT BUT… Firefighter: NO TIME FOR BUTS. They hand him a fire hose. Fireman: HERE! HOLD IT TIGHT! John is overpowered by the force of the hose. He sprays everywhere. Fireman: POINT IT AT THE FIRE, NOOB! John is being pushed into a burning building. He’s wearing an oxygen mask and carrying an axe. John is awkwardly hacking his way through a thin door. John returns from the burning building, having rescued a fishbowl with a goldfish in it. We’re at a café. John sits at a table with a friend, exhausted, covered in soot, wearing a dirty white tank top. Dax sits beside John, wearing a tiny firefighter helmet. John: I THINK I JOINED THE INVOLUNTARY FIRE BRIGADE TODAY.

Community iconc/nostupidquestions@lemmy.world by

In areas where there isn’t a dedicated U-turn lane, you have to use the left-turn lane if you want to make a U-turn. You just have to work with what’s available since not all roads are wide enough to have a separate U-turn lane.

On filtering controversial topics

Community iconc/autism@lemmy.world by
Hackbraten@lemmy.zip

Is it transphobic of me to completely filter out trans-related topics from all the media I consume? It’s just that there are so many topics I follow that I have to decide which ones I actually want to pay attention to. It’s not even that I have anything against the topic; I’ve just always been completely uninterested in it, because the concept of gender has simply never held any significance for me. It’s never been something that carried much weight for me; even in social interactions, I’ve always perceived the person I’m talking to simply as an individual – everything else was secondary.

Fasting Buddha Shakyamuni from Pakistan (ancient region of Gandhara) 3rd–5th century

Community iconc/visualarts@lemmy.dbzer0.com by
SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com

After reaching enlightenment at Bodhgaya, Shakyamuni meditated and fasted for forty-nine days. Thus, showing him as an emaciated renouncer relates to his enlightenment and his status as a yogic ascetic who has ultimate control over his body. Other characteristics that relate to his enlightenment include the kusha grass on which he sits and the scene on the base, which shows the Buddha’s first sermon, at Sarnath.

History Refused to Die by Thornton Dial 2004

Community iconc/visualarts@lemmy.dbzer0.com by
SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com

One of the most revered contemporary self-taught artists, Dial integrated into his work mass-produced objects and organic materials, all infused with rich symbolic resonances. His impressive History Refused to Die incorporates torn and stained clothing, wire, and other common materials as well as okra stalks and roots. The plant serves as a metaphor for the shared history—the “roots"—of people whose personal genealogies tie back to Africa. Widely associated with Southern cuisine, okra is indigenous to Africa and, like many other foodstuffs, came to the Americas via the international slave trade. Its presence in Dial’s sculpture evokes the ecological transplantation that paralleled the forced displacement and enslavement of millions of Africans throughout the New World.

Why don't nations purchase crude oil from each other only using their own currencies instead of US Dollars?

Community iconc/asklemmy@lemmy.world by
Shadow79@piefed.social

I recall when Russia wanted to purchase oil from the UAE, but due to sanctions Russia can’t conduct the transaction in dollars (often or not is used as the intermediary). Instead the Dirham was used as a replacement currency to acquire it, however it involved exchanging each other’s currency. I mean, why can’t just countries use each other’s own currency to purchase oil to steer away from the petro-dollar?

Deep-sea wildernesses are more important than the promise of seafloor mining (analysis) (news.mongabay.com)

Trying2KnowMyse[they@lemmy.ml

When I set sail on the MV NorSky in the summer of 2008 to probe the depths of Manus Basin off the coast of Papua New Guinea, I believed in the promise of deep-sea mining. As an early-career deep-sea ecologist, I was swayed by arguments in favor of this emerging industry. It offered a new way to obtain the metals needed for the renewable energy revolution, one allegedly free of the human rights and environmental abuses of terrestrial mining. The company was Nautilus Minerals, and the plan was to mine an active hydrothermal vent field called Solwara I.
