There’s a weird Kingsley Amis alternate history novel where Martin Luther became Pope. It’s set in the 20th century and the main plot is a choir singer trying to escape mandatory castration. Harold Wilson is the contemporary Pope of the time of the novel.

8·1 day agoYes. Fortunately the book is enough of a satire that you can decide it’s also a parody of itself.

21·1 day agoI should warn you that my friends and I all read this in high school and now we’re old and not one of us has couped any etats. Then again we were using the earlier edition that put a lot of emphasis on seizing radio stations.
Edit - So I knew the author was a neo-con, but damn, some of this is pretty ugly stuff. CWs for chauvinism, Islamophobia, and so on.
pp 15-16
My true aim in writing this book was entirely different: it was to explore the meaning of politics in the many backward countries politely described as “emerging.” Some, including South Korea, have well and truly emerged since then, but many others have not—Islam in particular seems to be an insurmountable obstacle to democratic governance.

Slop.@hexbear.net•[CW: SA] Democrats frothing at the mouth to defend abuse because someone on their team did itEnglish
34·3 days agoThe especially weird thing about defending Swalwell on this is that the accusation is convenient. Democrats have been handwringing for months that they have too many candidates in California’s “jungle primary,” where everyone’s on one ballot and the top two candidates move on to the general election. The Republicans have two major candidates. The Democrats have several. So there’s been talk that the state might accidentally elect its first Republican since 2006. Swalwell dropping out is just what they need.
So we’re in a position where establishment Dems (Pelosi, Swalwell’s own campaign team) are dropping their support, but the BlueMAGA crowd is coming to his defense.

sports@hexbear.net•Has MLB overtaken the NBA as America’s No. 2 league?English
2·5 days agoI don’t know about the actual numbers but there was talk several years ago that baseball was becoming a “regional sport” whereas the NFL and NBA were “national sports” where people watched more games than just their home team on their regional sports network. The reduction in game times and other rule changes seem to have reversed the trend in certain ways. The NBA still makes almost double the revenue of baseball on a per-game basis.

1·6 days agoYou may know this story (it was in the Long Strange Trip documentary), but that night the sound guy, Dennis Leonard, had to leave the truck to fix a microphone and ended up standing in the audience for this song, completely mesmerized. When they were mixing the Europe '72 album Jerry kept teasing him for abandoning his post.

He looks kinda like Jonah from Veep. Also known as Hepatitis J, The Cloud Botherer, and Jolly Green Jizzface.
