The biggest lie of modern Australia is that the White Australia policy was repealed in the 70’s. It still exists, it’s just unofficial now.
My (Chinese) wife and I were married for a decade and had 3 kids together before she applied for a visa to live in Australia. It took over 6 months, we had to provide photos of us together at different times in our relationship and statutory declarations by 2 citizens we’re not related to confirming we were in a genuine relationship.
My younger brother married an American and her visa was granted before the wedding.
I guarantee the guy in this article wasn’t just British, he’s also white, and that makes all the difference.
I provided a statutory declaration affirming to whoever needed to read it that my friend and her English fiancée were a real couple; as well as photos I had taken of them at bbqs, concerts and zoo trips etc over the years as he was applying for permanent residency in Australia. What you are describing is a thing all immigrants go through - the white ones as well.
You might want to have a look at the number of Indians and Chinese that we’re bringing in to Australia every day mate. There is no “white Australia” policy.
Tough one.
Sentences in modern societies should focus on mitigating the impact to victims and rehabilitating the offender.
Crimes that harm minors intentionally are a special category, and while I understand the hatred I think that wanting to punish the perpetrator for no other reason than revenge doesn’t really help anyone.
The requirement that permanent residents have their visa’s cancelled when found guilty of a crime is really just to ensure that the migrants we accommodate are fit and proper, compatible with Australian values. In this case, we’ve accommodated this guy for the last 40 or 50 years, and to remove him for the last 2 or 3 years of his life when he’s vulnerable is just vengeful punishment because the law happens to allow it in this case.
I mean, there’s plenty of Australian citizens convicted of similar crimes who are allowed to serve their time and then released to live out their days in Australia.
I don’t think that returning him to the UK serves any purpose.
It’s a bit more than simple punishment for revenge. But anyway how about the guillotine ?
And maybe not to his head, just a thought.
See as much as prison, corporal punishment or whatever isn’t simply about punishment, it’s about deterrent.
I have read that “deterrent” doesn’t actually stop certain crimes from happening. Say like impulsive murder, and of course if everybody was a decent human we would have no crime at all.
He raped a nine year old FFS ! He full well knew what he was doing. He deserves to be punished harshly. And “revenge” !?!?!! The nine year old whose life is totally messed up isn’t doing the sentencing ! That’s my opinion anyway. Pretty solid one too.
I really, really dont want to defend this guy, but ill just point out that the conviction was molesting a child. Theres a spectrum of severity of sexual assault cases and not to diminish the suffering of the victim, the language and sentence in this case implies that the act was not particularly severe.
As youve said yourself, the deterrent aspect of sentences does not deter other perpetrators.
Weird punishments like physical (not chemical) castration are more about appeasing victims and the public like your good self, than they are about mitigating the impact of the crime and minimising harm now and in the future.
He has lived in Australia for decades and has no remaining ties in the United Kingdom
Huh, maybe he should’ve considered that before destroying a child’s life…
As an Englishman that’s lived here for decades…no scratch that. As a decent human being that’s been on the planet for decades, I really don’t know, just keep him in solitary for the rest of his days, chop off two or three dangly things, drop him in Sydney Harbour covered in tuna oil, drop him in the middle of the Simpson desert with only a bottle of antifreeze to drink. I can think of many other things than just sending him back to the UK.
That just shifts the problem like sending a pervert priest to another church. However, he doesn’t deserve to live in this beautiful country simply because he " has connections here". Yeah we’ve seen what he does to certain “connections”.
Maybe this exposure will grant him a certain amount of publicity that will ruin his life if it’s not already ruined enough. What a piece of filth. Sick bastard.
I see your point and I agree, but I’d just chuck him in prison for at least a few decades (not just 14 months… in what universe is that just?).
Preferably with some kind of therapy to go along with it; no idea if that would even help but it’s worth a try, eh?
14 months is too short by far but the reason for relatively short sentences for these offenders in theory is so they don’t kill their victims.
I’d be down for permanently locking them up and putting suppression orders on the media. Ensures they’ll never hurt anyone and reduces the chance of other pedos finding out and offing their victims.
14 months is ridiculous. I mean sending him back would be a decent punishment. I’ve been here for 32 years and there’s no way I feel I could survive back over there. It’s not hell on earth but there are so many things that would disturb my well being.
He would get some more publicity upon his arrival too. Anyway, let’s hope Karma prevails.
