Australia@aussie.zone•Punters 'unlikely' to see millions in ticket sales refunded as long-running festival shuttersEnglish
2·27 days agoI would guess the artists will also need to get mostly paid with a cancellation as late as this. Three weeks out, the musical acts have spent money on travel costs, support staff, costumes, pyrotechnics, gear hire, etc., and they’ve also forgone booking other gigs for those dates.
Basically, everyone the festival would have paid, they’re going to need to pay a significant amount, or even the full amount, when they’re cancelling so late.
Add to that, they probably cancelled because they didn’t sell enough tickets, and so they don’t have that much cash laying around to begin with.

2·27 days agoI’m not an expert, but albinism is generally recessive, so if they breed an albino with a non-albino it’s very unlikely any offspring will have albinism.

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•Former defence leaders say oil wars threaten our security, and climate change deepens the dangerEnglish
5·29 days agoAll are in thrall to the amoral leadership of the fossil fuel and finance industries, determined to maximise short-term profit regardless of the consequences. There is no evidence that either the political or business leadership have the capacity or courage to face the big threats we face, the security implications of the crisis in the Gulf being just one of many.
Not mincing words!

6·29 days agoI’m guessing the festival already incurred costs with all sorts of staff and suppliers already, and the money will be going to them before any reaches ticketholders.

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•Varoufakis: ‘Fascism is darkening our doorsteps’English
2·1 month agoI can’t find any documentation describing the purpose of each field, but here’s what I reckon the situation is:
‘URL’ and ‘Image’ are fields for the main content of a post (which is why you can only actually specify one).
‘Thumbnail URL’, on the other hand, is a field for providing additional data for nicely displaying the post.
In Lemmy, the way an image specified in ‘Image’ or ‘Thumbnail URL’ is actually displayed is the same, but I suspect the two fields could be displayed differently in some other Fediverse application.

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•Varoufakis: ‘Fascism is darkening our doorsteps’English
4·1 month agoI think ‘Image’ overrides ‘URL’ (i.e. your post can be a link, or it can be an image, not both). I think what you’ll want to do is use the ‘Thumbnail URL’ field instead.

From a quick scroll through your post history:

2·1 month agoThe URL - i.e. where you go when you click the post title when you have the comments open - looks to just point to the header image, not to the article.
EDIT: Actually, I think the URL probably is empty, because there’s no domain shown under the title.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•An 18-year-old woman in Queensland faces two years in jail for wearing a shirt that says "from the river to the sea."English
75·1 month agoShe was arrested and charged, and took the option of accepting a formal caution, which requires that you don’t deny committing the offence. If she hadn’t taken that option, she’d still be facing charges (and gaol time).
The other guy who was arrested for speaking the words is still facing charges, so far as I know.
From the Guardian’s coverage, though, it seems likely his actions will be covered by the ‘reasonable excuse’ provisions of the law. It seems clear he said it in order to educate the crowd and make a political argument against the laws, and even to discourage the crowd from saying it:
“I’m not sure if everybody here [knows] the history of the different slogans that the government is trying to ban us from saying, so [in] the interests of education, I want to explain [it] to you,” he said at the protest.
He went on to deny that the phrase was terroristic or antisemitic, saying it was instead a call for freedom and dignity of the people between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea.
“So when we say, from the river to the sea, we are calling for the freedom of the people of Palestine,” he said.
He discouraged others from chanting the slogan.
Moments later, as protesters started to march, he was arrested.

Australia@aussie.zone•An 18-year-old woman in Queensland faces two years in jail for wearing a shirt that says "from the river to the sea."English
15·1 month agoThis protester’s charges have been resolved by their acceptance of an ‘adult caution’, so they won’t be facing any more legal proceedings over this incident. More details in my comment here: https://aussie.zone/post/30509630/21880036

181·1 month agoShe was arrested and charged, and took the option of receiving an ‘adult caution’. (Mentioned in this Guardian article.)
I think it would be misleading to say that’s ‘a warning and nothing more’.
If she hadn’t opted for the ‘adult caution’ - which requires that you don’t deny committing the offence - then she’d still be facing charges and gaol time.
So I reckon ‘complete lie’ might be a bit uncharitable, when really the information is just out of date.
Thanks for raising the point though, good to hear this protester doesn’t have legal proceedings hanging over their head.

Australia@aussie.zone•Adelaide has its own version of Pokemon Go called 'Polites' where the aim of the game is to find all the Polites signsEnglish
3·1 month agoDo you have an estimate of how many there are? Has anyone ever catalogued them all?
The article you linked says ‘Polites bought and sold hundreds of properties in the 1970s and 1980s’, but I assume many of the signs would have been taken down some time after the buildings were sold.
And wow, that article takes a turn at the end!
