Carlos Sainz (born September 1, 1994) is a Spanish driver who is currently driving for Williams.
Biography
[edit]Prior to his his F1 debut, Carlos Sainz participated in karting, winning the Asia-Pacific KF3 title in 2008 and the Junior Monaco Kart Cup in 2009. In 2010 he joined EuroInternational, debuting as a guest driver in the Formula BMW Pacific Series' opening race at Maylaysia's Sepang International Circuit alongside fellow teammate Daniil Kvyat. Through the season Sainz managed to achieve three pole position starts, two wins and two fastest laps. He moved onto Formula BMW Europe, finishing the season in 4th place with 227 points. He also joined the Red Bull Junior Team. He entered the 2010-11 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championships and the 2011 Formula Renault 2.0 NEC, which he won with eighteen podium finished across twenty races and a total of 489 points.
Sainz participated in both the British and Euro Series Formula 3 2012 championships, racing for Carlin. He finished the British championship in 6th position, having achieved nine podium finishes, including four wins. He was less successful in the Euro Series championship, finishing in 9th place with two podium finishes. In 2013, Sainz competed in the GP3 series for Arden, managing to achieve one pole position and one fastest lap record to finish the season in 10th place with 66 points. He also participated in Formula Renault 3.5, but due to his commitments to GP3, he missed several races from his first season. He transferred to DAMS for the 2014 season, managing to pick up seven wins across seventeen races and finishing the season in first place with 227 points.
Sainz made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso in the 2015 season, alongside Max Verstappen. His first race, the 2015 Australian Grand Prix, he managed to qualify to start in the 8th grid position, moving up to 7th after Valtteri Bottas was forced to withdraw from the race. He finished the race in 9th place. Despite experiencing seven retirements throughout the nineteen race season, he managed to place 15th with 18 points by the end of the year. He improved on this in 2016, achieving 12th place with 46 points. He was loaned to Renault during the 2017 Formula One World Championship, partnering with Nico Hülkenberg for the final four races, and replacing Jolyon Palmer. He finished the season in 9th place with 54 points. He remained with Renault throughout the 2018 Formula One World Championship before transferring to McLaren for the 2018 and 2019 championships, managing to achieve 6th place and a podium finish in each.
He joined Ferrari on a two-year contract in 2021, replacing Sebastian Vettel and partnering with Charles Leclerc. There, he managed his first F1 pole position and victory during the 2022 British Grand Prix and career highs of finishing 5th during both the 2021 and 2022 championships. He signed a two-year contract extension to stay with Ferrari until the end of 2024.
