I recently read “Why we sleep” by Matthew Walker (a sleep scientist) and he advises to aim for at least 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep, as getting consistently less will lead to all kinds of detrimental effects on your health, as some others have already pointed out.

I got like 6-7 hours of sleep a WEEK for 10+ years, and now my brain is severely broken.

4 hours is unhealthy for most humans. If you consume caffeine (coffee, energy drinks, etc.) it can affect your sleep.

6-7 at night and a 30 minute nap in a chair

I aim for 7½, but most days I end up with 6. Some days I can do 8 or 9

Lack of sleep leads to permanent brain damage. Don’t brag about it

My sleep habits got messed up as a teenager and I’ve struggled a lot to fix it over the years, without success. I want to aim to get 7 hours. I end up with an average of 6:30. This doesn’t sound too bad, but it is. At the end of every 2 weeks the sleep deficit is a full night’s missed sleep. Over the past year I have a 90 hour deficit (as if I’ve completely missed almost 13 nights sleep).

I used to live off 4 to 5 hours after my first kid. It’s no way to live. It’s like being on drugs, you might not realise what a bad hole you’re in till you come out of it. It’s one of the biggest determinants to good health. Once you start sleeping well consistently, your experience of everything on life will be so much better when your brain doesn’t have a constant fatigue haze. This takes weeks of good sleep to recover from (not 2 nights of good sleep after months of terrible sleep).

Sometimes 15 hours, sometimes 5 hours… 🤷‍♂️

You might be depressed.

if you get less than 6 hours of sleep on a regular basis you are doing damage to your body.

6-7 hours. 8+ hours during the weekend.

Somewhere between zero and 16. There is no “usually” for me.

  1. Used to be 6-7 hours, but I found getting enough sleep really helped with weightloss of all things. Had more energy all day, so I didn’t feel the need to snack after work. And the obvious, if I’m awake less, there’s just less time for me to be eating.

7-8 unless perimenopause is acting out

7:45 last night. Average sleep duration over the last year is apparently 8:24!

I can get away with 6 hours for a couple of nights, any more than that and I’m miserable and useless.

Between 5 and 7, depending on when the kid wakes up. I’m a night owl and struggle to go to bed on time.

avg 8-10, but lately waking up 1-2pm due to work previous day.

8-9 hours

Me too, bud. I’m also a go to bed early and wake up early kind of guy. What can I say – Fudgy loves a cup (or 5) of black medium roast coffee.

Between 7 and 7.5 hours of actual sleep on average. I get in early and wake up early.

 reply

Probably nine or so. I go to bed early and get up reasonably early too. As a morning person, and with chronic pain, this seems to work for me.

I am aiming at at least 8 hours every night. I usually fall asleep between 11 and 12 PM and wake up between 7:30 and 8:00 AM.

It happens more often in the last years that I am already awake between 6 and 7 AM though, because I am getting old.

 reply

Usually about 6-6.5. I generally go to bed around 930, fall asleep fast, and wake up around 4 energized and ready to go!

Then I hit a small crash midday, but can’t usually get away for a nap…

I probably get 6-7 on average. Up to 10 or so on weekends. Rarely as little as 3-4.

I’m tech lead for two off-shore teams who work 3-11AM my time, plus lots of daytime meetings and planning. So when I wake up in the middle of the night as I often do, I check to see if there are any issues that need my attention. And then I go back to sleep or sometimes I can’t. Today I probably fell asleep around 10. Woke up at 4 and had to send a message and await a response. Got on here while I wait. Got the issue resolved. But now I’m up because in a few hours I fly to vacation.

4-6 hours, because of kids. It’s not ideal, but I’ve gotten used to it.

As long as you feel well, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Everyone is built differently.

 reply

Usually 7.5 hours, +-20 minutes. I literally can’t properly function at my day job if I do less. On rare occasions when I do sleep less I usually end up making up for it over the weekend so

During college I also did way less, only 4-6 hrs/day… but then I’d fall asleep during classes

 reply

I only get about 4 hours

If you feel rested after that much sleep (but I suppose probably not if you’re having this consistently for months), that could be a symptom of mania.

Take that with a massive grain of salt, especially because I know nothing about you besides this one thing and because mania is more than just that.

I feel like I’m too old for this answer for two reasons, but:

I get 6-7!!! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I get about 10-11 hours now. I don’t work, so I just sleep whenever i feel like it. I usually go to sleep around 9-10, and usually wake up around 7-8-9.

When I was a teen and into my 20s, I was sleeping 6-7 hours a WEEK, so to sleep so much now is a blessing. I’m on sleeping meds now, so it’s fine.

Usually 7 hours.

About 7:30 give or take.

 reply

Around six. I feel like it’s enough but it probably isn’t.

There is apparently a very small percentage of the gene pool that only need 4-5 hours. I’m 6-8. It’s never consistent. Some nights I feel more tired and sleep earlier and some mornings I wake up earlier than I should but on average about 7 hours for me.

 reply

6 on work days 10 on the weekend. I zombie though work and don’t care if I’m a bit tired.

4 hours is crazy for being so young. Sleep at least 8

 reply
2

Usually 8 +/- a bit. I have become a lighter sleeper in my 40s and do wake up at least once most nights (excluding earthquakes because that’s not something I can help). My neighbor starts work really early and has to drive a heavy vehicle so that starts around sun-up (5:30 now but will be 4:30am in mid summer) so I try to adapt my schedule. It’s not that bad since my second job is farming and it’s much better in the early morning before the oppressive heat and humidity here.

I used to sleep well but in the past couple years, as my life has started falling apart, i can’t seem to sleep well anymore. I think i average around 5, but I’m guessing. I know many nights are less and some nights are more.

 reply

8-9. Used to be a lot less but I’ve got a good routine now and feel well rested each night.

 reply
2

I sleep 6 or 7. I used to sleep more 9-10 and it would drive my partners nuts. But as I’ve gotten older I find I tend to get up between 5 and 6 no matter what time I got to bed. Kind of sucks because I like to stay up late, but can no longer sleep in.

 reply
2

8, but I take an hour nap after lunch.

idk i dont count while sleeping

7-8 hours pretty consistently unless I have back pain or something

I make sure I follow my routine, get to bed at the same time, and I naturally wake up before my alarm.

8-9, I can’t function on less right now especially
