It might be underneath some hoses or similar due to PDO. If push comes to shove, you could always use a skinny funnel and pour it down the dipstick tube…
Turns out, it was hiding under the duct tape on the air intake the whole time, on the driver’s side. Guess the video I found had me thrown off a bit. Like, they’re basically the same engine, but the video covered a 98, we got a 96…
Just pour it over the engine. Make sure you give it a good thorough coat. It’ll work its way in.
I generally make sure the entire block is evenly coated in a thin layer (a shop rag helps), then stick it in the oven at 450F for an hour to let the patina cure. After a few coats you should have a nice, even surface.
A well seasoned engine shouldn’t ever stick as long as it’s maintained.
Did you sand it down to bare metal first?

I couldn’t find the OIL cap but I found one labeled 710 but I can’t find any 710 fluid.
That’s usually what I accomplish.
The alternator doesn’t like it though
Is that an oil cap in the right of the picture? Just in front of the duct taped intake. It’s a black cap with amber writing on it, so that’s what I suspect. If it goes directly to the engine, that’s it.

Yeah that’s definitely not engine oil.
The cap should say the oil weight on it too I think. Not sure about Chevy but a lot of other brands do this on modern cars.
It’s most likely gonna be coming out of one of the valve covers though. So if you can find those you should be able to hunt it down. It’s lame they didn’t put an extension on it to locate it up above all those vacuum lines and stuff though.
We found it, on the passenger side valve cover. Ours just doesn’t have the extended filler cap tube, so it’s buried down in there, but at least it does have an oil cap.

Hey there. I had the Chevy version of this truck once upon a time. The location depends on what engine you have:
If you have a 4-cylinder, cap should be near the center on top of the engine. If it’s the 4.3L V6 the cap will be off to one side, but still on top. I think we’re looking at the v6 here.
Look for a black or yellow cap, it should say OIL.
Can’t find. Should be obvious right? But we can’t even find it ☹️
Is there any way you can take a picture of the engine from directly above it?
It should be more towards the passenger side, maybe more forward then center. It may not say oil, but rather 5w-30 or something like that.
Yes, that’s exactly where it should be, but we’ve been investigating this thing for about a half hour now. We simply can’t find it, and the one half obvious thing top side is for power steering fluid, not engine oil..
It’s getting dark right now here, no more investigating tonight.

Hello! Heed me op, got your fix right here. There’s a goofy filler neck that comes off sometimes, a couple people have marked where it’s supposed to be with red squares. It’s gone though! There will be a hole in the top/side of the valve cover there with lord knows what field expedient solution plugging it. \Mine was a chunk of radiator hose that came up to the original location with the original cap jammed back in it to retain convenient access, but we can’t all be the world’s greatest shadetree mechanic. Here’s a video of some nerd actually fixing it with factory parts like a big dumb loser with way more money than me, just to help you find it:

Anyways, now we got this beater Sonoma, but at least it runs, and pretty smoothly at that for being 30 years old.
We found where to put the oil, it only needed ~3/4 of a quart. I’m pretty sure this one needs oil more than the last one..
Simple: try putting it in each hole and if the car doesn’t work just take it back out
If the head gasket is fucked enough you can put it in the same place as the coolant.
No owners manual in the glovebox? If there is, there might be a diagram in there.
There’s not even a glovebox, that was cut out and replaced with duct tape. It’s a wonder the title was still around.
Previous owner deceased, and the truck runs and all, but it’s a headache..
You can find most owners manuals PDFed online. At least for appliances, electronics, etc. I’ve never looked for an auto one…

You really want to change those intake boots. You can get cheap ones off ebay/aliexpress for <$50. It will ruin the engine sooner than later if you don’t.
Given they can’t find the place to pour engine oil, they probably won’t know what this means or how to do it.
It’s impossible to tell from the picture and I have no experience with it, but have you checked for a cap labeled “engine oil”? 13:10 in the video you posted

I think its on the driver side next to the brake booster, between the booster and the engine near the firewall. Worst case Ontario you can fill it through it’s dip stick hole.
No, what you’re seeing in the photo is for the power steering fluid. We found the engine oil filler cap, it’s on the passenger side, buried down in there. Its a shame it doesn’t have the extended filler cap tube, but we got funnels, so no big deal.
You can probably buy the extended filler cap. They should just thread in where your current oil cap goes.
I was actually mistaken on that part, it does actually have a short extended filler cap, it’s hiding under the air intake hose, and it’s actually on the driver’s side. My roommate and a friend found it while I was still sleeping on the couch, I was a little confused how my roommate explained the location to me, until I went downstairs to check for myself. Its definitely in an awkward to get to spot, but we got funnels, and it needed about 3/4 of a quart, topped off now. 👍

Yep, ultimately that’s exactly where I found it. I guess part of the confusion came from the video I found. Sure, dude’s video covered everything fairly well, but I think he said the one he was working on was a 98, we got a 96, so I guess GMC shuffled some parts around between those years. 🤷

Nah, we found it, it was just buried in a dumb inconvenient spot under the air breather tube, right under that fucky wad of duct tape rigup..
Usually on the top left near that jumble of hoses where the valve cover is, there is a filler neck sticking out. I can’t see it in this picture though.
And that’s the mystery of the day, where do pour oil?
Going by all the hacky looking fixes, it may have snapped off or been removed for some reason. I’d rustle around those hoses in that area to see if you can at least see the valve cover and feel around for an opening.

In the video, the truck is a different color at the end. Looks like a janky spray paint job. Maybe he ran over a pedestrian and had to go “incognito”.
I expect the car would have a manual with detailed instructions. Or google the car model.
Somehow I doubt that a 30yo model will have its manual hanging around, or to be in one piece after 30 years, especially knowing the paper quality of that era…

As far as the manual, this thing doesn’t even have a glove box, half the dashboard itself was just straight up cut out and covered over with duct tape. I’m pretty sure the previous owner did that to make the passenger side into something of a bed for semi comfortable sleeping. 🤷
