You can use the Gemini in Docs side panel in some languages. Learn more about language availability.
Get started with Gemini in Docs
- On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini
.
- In the side panel, select a suggested prompt or write your own prompt. Select a suggestion
Enter a prompt in Gemini
- Select from the list of suggestions.
- To get more options, select More suggestions.
- At the bottom, in the prompt box, replace the example text with the information you want.
- Press Enter.
- At the bottom, in the prompt box, enter a prompt.
- Press Enter.
- Select from the list of suggestions.
- Optional: To remove your history, click More options
Clear history.
Tips:
- To avoid the loss of your history, insert generated output in the document.
- You lose your conversation history when:
- You refresh your browser.
- You close and reopen the document.
- Your computer goes offline.

Things to ask Gemini in Docs
- On your computer, open a document from Google Docs.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini
.
- When you open a document that has text, on the side panel, you’ll find a summary of your document.
- To get a summary of your document, ask Gemini.
- Examples:
- “Summarize this document in 3 bullet points.”
- “Explain this document like I'm 5 years old.”
- To summarize a specific section of your document:
- Highlight the text.
- On the side panel, ask Gemini to summarize your text.

- On the floating bar, click Refine

- To refine the content how you want, you can:

You can ask Gemini to generate images in Docs.
- On your computer, open a document from Google Docs.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini

- On the side panel, create your own prompt.

- On the image that you like, you can hover over to:

You can use Ask Gemini to create a fully editable presentation in Google Slides with a single prompt.
- In Google Docs, open Ask Gemini

- In the side panel describe the presentation you want to create. For example: "Create a slide on quantum computing for a general audience with a modern design."
- Optional: To give your presentation the same style as an existing slide deck, you can use @<presentation name> to reference it. For example: "Create a presentation based on @old_project".
- Click Submit
- To refine your presentation plan, you can answer Gemini’s follow-up questions. You may also see recommended sources that you can add for Gemini to use as it generates your presentation.
- Click Next.
- Keep the tab open until Gemini generates your presentation; this may take up to several minutes. You can switch to other tabs or windows but do not close the existing tab.

You can use Ask Gemini to create and manage tasks and ask questions about your tasks which include suggested to-dos from chats and emails that need your attention.
- In Google Docs, open Ask Gemini
- In the side panel, enter a prompt. For example:

- "Add a task to complete the project proposal today."
- "Change the date of that task to tomorrow instead."
- "Mark the Friday workout task as complete."

- In the bottom bar, click Leave feedback
