Composer and sound artist Dionisaf has built a quietly distinctive body of work rooted in Ambient music, tape experimentation and a deep sensitivity to place. Having released music through his own labels Chitra Records and Ambient Cat, alongside music for Élan Vital, Ambient Soundscapes, Atlantea Records and Mahorka, he brings together a background in formal composition studies with a more instinctive attraction to contemporary experimental forms. After studying composition in Russia during the late 2000s and early 2010s, he gradually moved away from academic traditions in search of something more immediate and personal, immersing himself in Ambient and exploratory electronic music from 2019 onward. Now based in Washington DC, his latest album looks back to the seven years he spent living in Mississippi, a place that became deeply woven into his creative and personal life.

Mississippian is a warm, acoustic-led meditation on memory, landscape and farewell. Built around an old flea-market guitar that Dionisaf restored himself, the instrument becomes the emotional centre of the album, carrying what he describes as a sound that reflects “the way the Mississippi sounds”. Around it, he layers field recordings, kalimba, a metal xylophone, shaker, subtle synthesizer textures and carefully chosen effects, while ‘Forgotten Trails of the Apalachee’ features a guest appearance from Dutch flautist Liesbet Leroy, whose playing adds further human and lyrical dimension to the record. Across the album, folk-like melodies, meditative atmospheres and gently hypnotic soundscapes coexist in a style that feels both intimate and expansive.

Much of the music was recorded during the period when Dionisaf knew he would soon be leaving Mississippi, perhaps for good. That awareness infused the album with quiet emotional gravity, as it became a way of reflecting on the years he spent absorbing the state’s culture, history and natural character. He describes the record as “a respectful farewell - a way of taking stock”, noting that seven years marks a complete human cycle, a span in which every cell in the body is renewed. In this sense, Mississippian is not only about a place, but also about personal change and renewal.

Each track is tied to a specific memory or impression: magnolias blooming outside a window, cotton fields passing by from a car, empty rural roads, overgrown forest trails, nights under vast star-filled skies, the scent of trees, carpets of dry leaves in October and the slow movement of an ageing horse across a field. Together these fragments form what Dionisaf calls a “sound portrait” of Mississippi in its many manifestations. Rather than presenting a literal documentary, the album filters these experiences through atmosphere and feeling, creating a deeply personal yet universally relatable reflection on attachment, departure and the landscapes that remain with us long after we leave behind a place we love.
