in the month of September and we're focusing on various issues to do with infection
00:06
and for the last installation we're going to talk about hematospermia and also prostatitis.
00:14
For somebody who ejaculates blood, yes blood in the semen is a condition called hematospermia
00:27
and that itself can be related to inflammation or just a vascular rupture that can occur.
00:34
But obviously for somebody, seeing blood in your sperm can be something that is traumatizing
00:41
that and can lead you to worry about cancer. In fact there was one study that was done in the
00:48
Northwestern University in the United States looking at 26,000 men who went for prostate
00:55
cancer screening. Out of these 26,000 men, 6.5% of them were detected having cancer and out of the
01:05
6.5% having cancer, 13% of them actually presented with hematospermia or blood in their semen.
01:13
What does that tell you? It doesn't tell you that if you produce blood in your sperm, you have 13%
01:23
chance of getting cancer. However it actually tells you that for men who go for screening
01:29
and out of this group of people, some of them might be producing blood in their semen and might
01:36
be detected having prostate cancer. So what are the chances of getting prostate cancer? Actually
01:44
it's significantly less and vast majority of time this is a bit of inflammation. For some men it's
01:50
an acute prostate infection that causes an abscess and broken vessels and therefore blood in the
01:58
semen. For some people it might just be the infection of the testicle or seminal vesicles
02:05
and for all these patients the problems of hematospermia will resolve with antibiotics.
02:12
However for some people it's idiopathic, we just don't know where the blood comes from.
02:17
So for these patients with a bit of medication such as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, it will
02:25
reduce the testosterone supply to the prostate, will shrink the prostate and subsequently stop
02:31
the bleeding. So some of the men who are at high risk of getting prostate cancer might just need a
02:38
simple test such as a PSA blood test or an ultrasound scan or the transrectal ultrasound
02:45
scan and if that itself rule out cancer then a bit of medication will tend to resolve this completely.
02:53
So for the month of October, what do we call it? We call it Pink October and then what we're going
03:00
to talk about? Any issues to do with the breast. So for first installation we're going to talk
03:05
about breast cancer in men. So it's exceedingly rare but it can have adverse consequences because
03:12
most of the time it is found late. So stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr G on the Spot.
