00:00In the month of September, when we call it the Blue September, dealing with different issues
00:06related to prostate cancer. And we are focusing on sexual health relation with prostate cancer.
00:13And today, we're talking about reproductive health, whether prostate cancer can cause infertility.
00:19What is prostate cancer per se itself is hardly known to cause infertility because the testicle
00:31will continue to produce testicular hormone, which is testosterone, and also sperms. And that sperms
00:37sometimes can be delivered to the prostate itself. However, in the presence of prostate cancer,
00:43it occasionally may result in obstruction or retrograde ejaculation. Under such circumstances,
00:51men may feel like they are not ejaculating because they get dry climax. However, they continue to be
00:59fertile. However, the treatment of prostate cancer definitely will put a little bit of dampening
01:05impact on the fertility. Number one, radical prostatectomy. Radical prostatectomy is the
01:12removal of the whole prostate itself. And when that's removed, this prostate, which is functional
01:18for secretion of seminal fluid, is no longer functional. So men who undergo radical prostatectomy
01:25can no longer ejaculate. Under such circumstance, men will become infertile naturally.
01:32The second possibility of men become affected by prostate cancer treatment is radiotherapy.
01:39So radiotherapy such as external beam radiation or brachytherapy itself can cause scarring of the
01:46prostate and result in infertility as well. And lastly, men who undergo treatment with hormone
01:53suppression will also reduce the production of the sperms and also testosterone. So under such
02:01circumstance, if men continue to want to father a child, is there a possibility? Of course there is.
02:07That is called artificial reproductive technology. Under such circumstance, we will retrieve the
02:15sperms directly from the testicle and create IVF or in vitro fertilization test tube babies.
02:23And under such circumstance, science will actually lend a helping hand for men who are affected by
02:30the prostate cancer inducing infertility. Does testosterone cause prostate cancer?
02:36Can suppression of testosterone cause the actual reduction in the risk of prostate cancer?
02:44If you are interested or you think that your testosterone might be actually putting you at risk of prostate cancer,
02:50then you need to stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
